Two labels, read together, answer the question properly. Here is what each of them actually means.

Two Labels, Two Different Questions

Impact level answers “what is this bra for?” Support mechanism answers “how does this bra work?” Most shopping goes wrong because only the first question gets asked, and the second is the one that determines whether the bra performs on your body.

Consider how odd this is in any other product category. You would not buy a running shoe knowing only that it was labelled for running, with no information about whether it was cushioned or minimal, neutral or stability. Yet sports bras are routinely bought on impact level alone, and impact level is the equivalent of knowing only that the shoe is for running.

The gap matters most at larger cup sizes. Two bras both labelled high impact sit next to each other on a shelf. One is a pull-on compression crop with a smooth front. The other has two seamed cups, a hook closure and a racerback. On a B cup, both will work. On a G cup, one will work and one will not, and nothing on either label tells you which.

Impact Levels: What They Actually Describe

Impact refers to the movement the activity generates, which is largely a function of how much your feet leave the ground and how often. It is a reasonable shorthand once you know what it is measuring.

What the label does not tell you is how the bra proposes to handle that movement. A high-impact rating is a claim about intended use, and manufacturers apply it with varying rigour. There is no independent standard behind it, which is worth knowing before treating it as a specification.

The Three Support Mechanisms

Three Mechanisms, and What Each Is Good At
Simplest · one chamberCompressionPresses both breasts inward against the chest wall as a single mass, using one smooth front panel and usually no closure. It is comfortable, easy to pull on, inexpensive to make and genuinely effective at smaller cup sizes. Its limitation is that it restrains vertical movement and does relatively little about lateral movement, and it scales badly: more tissue means more force to resist, without any additional mechanism for resisting it. Almost all seamless sports bras are compression, since shaping a cup requires seams.
Structural · two chambersEncapsulationSurrounds each breast in its own shaped cup, so the two are supported independently. Because the sides are separate, lateral movement is controlled rather than merely resisted, and the garment does not need to compress hard in order to work. Encapsulated bras look like bras rather than crop tops, and typically carry a hook closure, adjustable straps and seamed or moulded cups. This is the construction that becomes necessary rather than optional as cup size increases.

The two-second check

Before reading any description, look at the front of the garment in the first product image. A seam or gore running down the centre between two distinctly shaped cups means encapsulation. One continuous smooth surface means compression. A visible outer layer over shaped cups means combination. That single glance tells you more about how the bra will behave on your body than the impact rating, the fabric list or the marketing copy.

Putting the Two Together

Impact level narrows the field. Cup size then decides which mechanism you need within it.

Fitting and Sizing

Step 1

Measure Properly, and Prefer Band-and-Cup Sizing

Measure the ribcage directly under the bust, snug and horizontal, rounding to the nearest even number. Then measure across the fullest part of the bust and subtract; each inch of difference is one cup letter. Where a sports bra is offered in band and cup sizing, use it in preference to S through XL, since one letter cannot describe both a ribcage circumference and a cup volume. Step 2

Size Alpha Sizing by the Band

When only S through XL is available, choose by your band measurement rather than your bust. The band is what determines whether the bra holds position, and a size chosen on bust measurement will usually have a band too loose to support.

Step 3

Set the Band Firm, Not Tight

A sports bra band should be noticeably firmer than an everyday bra and should never restrict a full deep breath. Two fingers should slide underneath with real resistance. If you cannot breathe fully, or the band leaves deep indentations after a session, go up a band and down a cup rather than tolerating it.

Step 4

Check the Cup Edge After Scooping

Lean forward and settle each breast fully into its cup. On an encapsulated bra, a gaping top edge means the cup is too large and tissue overflowing means too small. On a compression bra, look for tissue escaping at the underarm, which is the usual sign that compression alone is not enough at your size.

Step 5

Move Before You Decide

Jump on the spot ten times, jog a few steps, swing your arms overhead and across your body. Watch whether the band travels upward, whether the straps slide outward, and whether the cups stay in contact. This is the only meaningful test, because standing still is not the load case the garment was built for.

Step 6

Count Wears, Not Months

Elastic degrades from sweat, heat and repeated loading rather than from time on a shelf. Roughly 30 to 40 wears is a realistic working life under regular use, which for someone training four times a week is around two months per bra. Rotating two lets each dry fully and recover between sessions, which extends both.

What the Research Actually Shows

Breast biomechanics is a real research field, most prominently associated with the Research Group in Breast Health at the University of Portsmouth, and it is worth separating what the evidence supports from what marketing has built on top of it.

Two findings are well established and genuinely useful. The first is that breast movement during activity is multi-directional, following a roughly figure-of-eight path rather than a simple vertical bounce, which is the mechanical basis for the whole encapsulation argument. The second is that a well-fitted high-support sports bra substantially reduces that movement compared with an everyday bra or none at all, with the largest absolute effect at larger cup sizes.

What is less firm is the precise numbers. Reported reductions vary considerably depending on the study, the activity, the cup size and how movement is measured, which is why you will see figures quoted anywhere from around 50 percent to close to 80 percent depending on the source. Any single precise percentage presented as settled fact deserves scepticism, including ones quoted by retailers.

A claim worth being careful with

Breast tissue is supported partly by Cooper’s ligaments, and it is very commonly asserted that unsupported movement during exercise stretches them permanently and causes lasting sagging. That claim is repeated everywhere, including by people selling sports bras, and the evidence for lasting damage from exercise specifically is thin. Breast shape over time is influenced mainly by genetics, skin elasticity, hormonal life stages, pregnancy and changes in body composition.

We would rather be straight about this than sell on it. The reliable reasons to wear a supportive sports bra are that it is more comfortable, that it lets you exercise without pain or distraction, and that discomfort is a genuine barrier to activity for a lot of people. Those are good enough reasons on their own without invoking permanent damage.

The impact label tells you what the manufacturer had in mind. The front panel tells you what the bra will actually do. When those two disagree, believe the front panel.
