Moulded or seamed cups: which one actually suits your shape?
A moulded cup is pressed from one piece of foam into a single fixed shape. A seamed cup is stitched from two or three flat panels into a three-dimensional shape. That means a moulded cup asks your body to match its shape, and a seamed cup is shaped around your body. Moulded suits round, even and fuller-on-top breasts. Seamed suits shallow, pendulous, teardrop, east-west, side-set and uneven breasts, and it carries projection far better above a G cup.
A moulded cup and a seamed cup are two different pieces of engineering that happen to be sold side by side. One is formed. One is built. Once you can see the difference, most of the fit complaints people bring to us stop being mysterious.
- A moulded cup has one fixed shape. Foam is heat-pressed over a form and holds that curve permanently, whatever the wearer looks like.
- A seamed cup is drawn around a body. Flat panels joined at an angle create depth, and each seam directs tissue where the pattern puts it.
- Gaping at the top of a moulded cup is a shape mismatch, not a size error. Sizing down makes it worse, because it removes volume from the whole cup.
- Seams are not old-fashioned. The specialist full-bust houses build three-part seamed cups because projection and containment come from seams, not from foam.
- Above roughly a G cup, moulded construction runs out of depth. Seamed three-part cups dominate the larger sizes for that reason.
- Unlined and stretch lace is the third answer. It is the most forgiving option for a bust that changes across the month.
How a moulded cup and a seamed cup are actually built
A moulded cup is heat-pressed from a single piece of foam over a metal form, and a seamed cup is cut from two or three flat panels and stitched together into a curve. Everything else about the two constructions follows from that one difference.
Moulding is closer to making a helmet than to sewing. A foam laminate is heated, pressed over a mould and cooled so it keeps the curve permanently. The cup that comes off the mould has one depth, one apex position and one angle, and it holds all three until the foam is crushed or degraded. Nothing about the person wearing it changes the shape. That is the whole appeal, and it is also the whole limitation. In the United States the same cup is usually spelled molded and sold as a contour or T-shirt cup.
A seamed cup is sewing, and sewing starts flat. Flat fabric has no depth at all. Depth appears the moment two flat edges are joined at an angle, and the sharper that angle, the more the cup projects forward. A classic three-part cup joins a lower inner panel, a lower outer panel and an upper panel. Each seam is a structural line that does not stretch along its own length, so it holds breast tissue exactly where the pattern maker decided it should sit.
Projection comes from the angle where two panels meet, not from the thickness of the material. A seamed cup can be deep and still be thin enough to disappear under a blouse.
The vertical seam decides where the fullest point of the cup sits. A full bust needs that point low and forward, and a mould struggles to hold a deep, low apex.
A lower outer panel cut on a firm grain pushes tissue from the underarm toward the centre front. Foam cannot push in one direction because it has no grain.
An upper panel cut in stretch lace or power mesh lets one cup absorb a fluctuating or asymmetric bust. A moulded cup has one volume and holds it.
Foam gives you a surface. Seams give you a shape. Only one of those can be engineered around a particular body.

Which breast shapes each construction actually suits
Moulded cups suit round, even and fuller-on-top breasts, and seamed cups suit shallow, pendulous, teardrop, east-west, side-set and asymmetric breasts. This is the heart of the choice, and it explains more fit failures than band size does.
A mould is an average made solid. The form it was pressed over represents a breast that is evenly filled from top to bottom and sits fairly forward on the chest. If that describes you, a moulded cup is genuinely excellent and needs no adjustment. If it does not describe you, no amount of size hunting will make a fixed shape fit a different shape. A seamed pattern can be redrawn panel by panel, which is why the same design is offered in a shallow cut and a projected cut. Why a moulded cup gapes at the top, and why sizing down makes it worse
A moulded cup gapes at the top because its fixed depth is greater than your breast's depth at that point. That is a shape mismatch, not a size error, and it is the single most mis-answered fit question we see.
The mould was drawn for a breast that fills the upper cup. If yours is shallower up there, and shallow, teardrop, pendulous and post-weight-loss shapes usually are, the foam has nowhere to collapse to. It is a rigid shell. So it holds an air pocket open at the top edge, and the pocket shows through clothing as a soft dent or a ripple.
Sizing down does not close that pocket. Going down a cup size removes volume from the entire cup, not just from the top of it. The cup root gets narrower and shorter, so the breast is now compressed at the side and underneath while the top edge still stands away from the chest. The usual result is underarm spill and a gape at the same time, which people then read as two separate problems. Going down a band size instead pushes the cup forward on the chest and can widen the gap.
If a moulded cup gapes at the top while the same bra spills at the underarm, do not size down. Both faults share one cause, which is that a fixed shape does not match your shape. Change the construction, not the number. Our bra fitting guide walks through the rest of the checks.
Three changes actually fix a gaping moulded cup. Switch to a seamed cup, which can be cut shallow. Switch to a style that removes the top of the cup altogether, which is what a balconette or a plunge does. Or stay moulded but choose one with a stretch or partly unlined upper edge, which lets the rim settle against the chest rather than standing off it.
Why moulded cups thin out above a G cup
Above roughly a G cup, a moulded cup becomes too shallow to project and contain a full bust, which is why seamed three-part construction dominates the larger sizes. This is a manufacturing limit, not a style preference.
A mould can only draw foam so deep. Push past that and the foam thins at the apex, loses its spring and starts to collapse in wear, or the maker compensates with thicker, heavier foam that becomes hot and stiff. Cup volume climbs quickly as the cup letter climbs, so the depth a G or H cup needs is well beyond what a comfortable pressed foam shell delivers. Seams solve depth with geometry instead of material. Two panels meeting at a sharp angle produce as much projection as you like and add almost no weight.
Load is the second reason. A large moulded cup is a rigid shell held against a moving body by the band and straps alone. A seamed cup spreads the load along its seam lines, and those seams work as internal scaffolding, which is why they resist the cup rolling or folding when you move.

None of the three exists in our range below a D cup. At D cup they appear alongside everything else. At H cup the stocked list narrows to six brands in total, and three of them are those UK houses. We will not overstate this. Collection counts move with buying as much as with physics, and our H cup collection holds more styles than our G cup collection does. What the catalogue shows cleanly is a change of hands rather than a cliff edge. The brands built around seamed full-bust engineering start where the full-bust sizes start, and they are still there at the top of the range when most other labels have stopped. The everyday trade-offs: smoothness, heat, packing and lifespan
Moulded cups win on smoothness under fitted knits and on nipple coverage, and seamed cups win on projection, breathability, packing and repairability. Neither is better overall, and most wardrobes are better with both.

Washing is where most moulded bras die early. Never fold a moulded cup inside out to save drawer space, never wring it and never tumble dry it, because the crease and the heat damage are both permanent. Unlined and stretch lace: the third option most people skip
An unlined bra is the most forgiving option for a bust that changes across the month, because unlined cups are nearly always seamed and are often cut in stretch lace. There is no foam setting a fixed volume, so the cup gives when you are swollen and does not stand away when you are not.
Stretch lace is doing something specific here, and it is worth naming. A firm lace has recovery, so it holds tissue in place, but it also has a few millimetres of give in every direction. That give is enough to absorb the difference between one breast and the other, or between one week and the next, which is exactly the change a moulded cup cannot make. It is also why unlined styles are so often recommended for asymmetry.
If your bust fluctuates across the month, keep one unlined seamed bra alongside your moulded one instead of buying the moulded cup a size up. A larger moulded cup gapes for three weeks to fit for one. We carry 30 unlined bras and 29 lace bras.
The trade-off is honest and it is worth knowing before you order. Unlined cups show nipple, they show texture under thin knits, and they do nothing to smooth. They are not the bra for a fine white T-shirt. They are frequently the most comfortable thing in a drawer for everything else.
How to tell which one you already own
Look at the outside surface of the cup. Visible stitch lines crossing the cup mean it is seamed, and a continuous surface with stitching only around the edges means it is moulded. Three further checks settle any doubt.
- The drawer test. A moulded cup keeps its dome when nothing is in it and sits up off a flat surface. A seamed cup collapses flat, because its shape only exists under tension.
- The press test. Press the cup between finger and thumb. A moulded cup has a springy foam thickness that pushes back. A seamed cup is one or two layers of fabric with nothing between them.
- The inside-out test. Turn the cup out. A moulded cup shows one continuous lining bonded to foam. A seamed cup shows stitched panel joins with a seam allowance running along each one.
Some bras are both, and that is not a trick. A moulded cup can carry a decorative overlay seam that does no structural work, and several full-bust designs pair a moulded or foam-lined lower cup with a seamed stretch upper panel to get smoothness at the bottom and adaptability at the top. If the seam disappears when you flex the cup, it is decorative. If flexing the cup makes the seam angle change, it is structural. How to choose in four steps
Choosing between moulded and seamed takes four steps, and shape comes before size in all of them. Work through them in order.
Identify your shape, not just your size
Stand side-on to a mirror without a bra and look at where the volume sits. Fullness spread evenly top to bottom points to moulded. Fullness concentrated below the nipple, tissue pointing outward, a wide gap at the centre or a visible difference between sides all point to seamed. Our breast shapes guide has the full set.
Diagnose the bra you already dislike
Put on the bra that has never quite worked and look for one of two faults. A gap at the top edge with the cup otherwise full means the shape is too deep for you at the top. Tissue escaping at the underarm or over the top edge means volume is being pushed somewhere the cup does not go. Both point away from moulded.
Match the construction to the fault
Choose a seamed three-part cup for gaping, for spill at the underarm, for asymmetry and for anything above a G cup. Choose moulded for smoothness under fitted knits, for nipple coverage and when your shape is round and even. Choose unlined seamed for comfort, heat and monthly fluctuation.
Re-check the size in the new construction
Do not assume your size carries across. Seamed cups from UK-sized houses run on a different cup progression from US labels, and a deeper cup can free up room in the band.
