DD Cup Bras: The Curvy Size US and UK Still Share
DD is the tipping point of bra sizing — the last cup where US and UK labels still mean the same thing, and the point where fit starts to reward proper construction over a pretty print.
It also carries the widest style range of any curvy cup: t-shirt, plunge, balconette, strapless and sports all exist in real numbers here. This edit runs nine band sizes, 28DD to 44DD, from Freya, Fantasie, Panache, Cleo and Le Mystère. Pick your band below and shop the exact size, not just the letter.
How big is a DD cup?
There is no single answer, because DD is a difference, not a volume. The letter measures the gap between your bust and your underbust, and the cup is cut in proportion to its band — so a 28DD holds far less than a 44DD despite sharing the letter. What makes DD special is agreement: DD is the last cup where US and UK sizing use the same label, so a US 34DD and a UK 34DD are the same bra. The systems only split above DD — the next cup up is a US DDD, a UK E. In EU sizing, DD is written as E. Sister sizes are the quick fix when a band feels off: a 34DD holds the same volume as a 32E and a 36D. HauteFlair stocks 47 DD styles across 28DD to 44DD — everyday, t-shirt, plunge, strapless and sports.
Every DD band size, with live counts
The band is your ribcage measurement and it carries roughly 80% of the support. Get the band right first — the cup letter only means something once it sits on the correct band.
| Size | Approx. underbust | Styles live | Notes | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 28DD | approx. 28 in. | 27 | Small frame, curvy bust — a band mainstream retailers rarely make | Shop 28DD |
| 30DD | approx. 30 in. | 30 | Petite frames; often the right band for anyone wearing a loose 32 | Shop 30DD |
| 32DD | approx. 32 in. | 40 | Slim frames; sister size to 30E and 34D | Shop 32DD |
| 34DD | approx. 34 in. | 47 | Joint deepest DD band, and the most searched DD size in the US | Shop 34DD |
| 36DD | approx. 36 in. | 47 | Joint deepest; a core curvy size with the fullest style range | Shop 36DD |
| 38DD | approx. 38 in. | 44 | Broad selection across everyday, t-shirt and full-coverage | Shop 38DD |
| 40DD | approx. 40 in. | 29 | Fuller frames; full-coverage and side-support styles dominate | Shop 40DD |
| 42DD | approx. 42 in. | 17 | Extended plus; a smaller but genuinely stocked selection | Shop 42DD |
| 44DD | approx. 44 in. | 16 | The widest band we carry in DD cup | Shop 44DD |
Counts are live as of the last update and move with stock. Underbust figures are approximate starting points — every brand cuts its band slightly differently, so check the size chart on the product.
DD sister sizes — and where to go when DD is wrong
If the cup is right but the band is not, move sideways rather than up or down a letter — the cup volume stays the same. If the cup itself is wrong, step to the neighbouring letter.
| If you wear | Band too loose, try | Band too tight, try | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32DD | 30E | 34D | Same cup volume, tighter or looser ribcage grip |
| 34DD | 32E | 36D | Same cup volume, tighter or looser ribcage grip |
| 36DD | 34E | 38D | Same cup volume, tighter or looser ribcage grip |
| 38DD | 36E | 40D | Same cup volume, tighter or looser ribcage grip |
| 40DD | 38E | 42D | Same cup volume, tighter or looser ribcage grip |
| Cup | Position in the run | Styles live | Move here if |
|---|---|---|---|
| D cup | One step below DD | 128 | DD cups wrinkle or gape at the top on a band that fits properly |
| DD cup | You are here | 47 | You are here — US DD = UK DD = EU E |
| DDD / E cup | One step above DD | 15 | You spill over the top or under the arm on a correct band (US DDD = UK E) |
What we stock in DD cup
DD is the size where selection is widest — the point where full-bust construction is available but moulded and t-shirt styles have not yet thinned out. Nearly every category exists here in real numbers.
| Style | In DD cup | What to look for | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday underwire | The core of the DD range | Full or three-part cups, firm band, smooth finish | All DD cup bras |
| T-shirt / moulded | Strong — DD is the last cup with a full moulded range | Seam-free moulded cups for an invisible line under knits | T-shirt bras |
| Plunge & balconette | Wide selection | Lower centre gore for open necklines; balconette for lift | Shop all bras |
| Strapless | Good selection at DD | Deep band, silicone grip, side boning to hold the cup | Strapless bras |
| Sports | Yes — encapsulation plus compression | Separate moulded cups and a wide, firm underband | Sports bras |
| Minimizer | Available across the band range | Redistributing cups that reduce the projected line | Minimizer bras |

I know my band
Go straight to your exact size. Nine DD bands from 28DD to 44DD, each its own collection with live stock.
Shop 34DD →Smooth under a t-shirt
DD is the last cup with a full moulded range. Seam-free cups give a clean line under fitted knits.
Shop t-shirt bras →The band rides up
A riding band is almost always a band too big. Drop a band and go up a cup — if you wear 36DD, try 34E.
Shop DDD / E →The cups gape at the top
Excess fabric at the top edge on a band that fits means one cup step too deep. Try D.
Shop D cup →Strapless for an occasion
DD strapless is a real range, not an afterthought. Look for a deep grippy band and side boning.
Shop strapless →I want a wider band
DD on a 40 to 44 band sits in our plus range, where deeper bands and wider straps come as standard.
Shop plus size →A DD should disappear under everything you wear — carried on the band, smooth under a t-shirt, supportive without feeling like scaffolding. Fit the band first; the rest follows.
The HauteFlair StandardThe complete DD cup fitting guide
What a DD is across sizing systems, how to measure, the construction that matters, and how the brands differ.
01What a DD is, in US, UK and EU sizing+
The cup letter describes the gap between your bust and band, so it only means something alongside a band number:
- US and UK agree at DD. This is the last cup they label identically — a US 34DD and a UK 34DD are the same bra. Above DD the systems split: US goes DD, DDD, DDDD; UK goes DD, E, F.
- The next cup up is a US DDD, a UK E. Same body, two labels. If you have outgrown DD, that is the size to try.
- EU sizing calls DD an E. A US/UK 34DD is an EU 75E. The continental alphabet has no DD, so it uses E for this volume.
- The band drives volume: a 28DD and a 44DD share a letter and hold very different amounts, because every cup is cut in proportion to its band.
02How to measure & sister sizing+
Two measurements set your size, and one trick fixes most fit problems:
- Underbust — measure snugly around the ribcage directly beneath the bust, tape level all the way round. This gives your band.
- Bust — measure around the fullest point without compressing. The difference between the two gives the cup.
- Sister sizing — if the cup fits but the band does not, move across: down a band means up a cup, and vice versa. A 34DD, a 32E and a 36D all hold the same volume.
If you land between two bands, take the smaller one and go up a cup. A slightly firm band stretches into place; a slightly loose one only gets looser. For the full walkthrough, see our guide to measuring your bra size, or convert a size you already own with the bra size converter.
03Construction that matters at DD+
DD sits at the crossover between mainstream and full-bust, so you get the widest choice of construction of any curvy cup:
- A supportive, mostly non-stretch band — it does most of the work. Snug and level on the loosest hook, so you can tighten it as it relaxes.
- Wire that fully encircles the breast — sitting flat on the ribcage behind the breast, never on tissue. Wire on tissue means the cup is too small.
- Moulded cups still work well here — DD is the last size where a seam-free moulded cup can project and contain properly, which is why the t-shirt range is so deep at this cup.
- Three-part and side-support cups — for anyone who prefers lift and a rounder shape, these seamed styles are widely available at DD too.
- Adjustable straps and two-to-three hooks — enough to fine-tune without the heavier hardware full-bust cups need.
04Sports bras at DD+
DD is roughly where compression-only sports bras stop being enough on their own. Breast tissue has no muscle to support it, and unsupported movement during running strains the ligaments over time.
- Look for encapsulation — separate moulded cups that hold each breast individually, ideally combined with light compression for stability.
- The band should be wider and firmer than your everyday bra, with little stretch through the underband.
- Replace them more often than you think — a sports bra loses meaningful support long before it looks worn.

05Brands & care+
DD is well served because both mainstream and specialist houses cut it. Freya and Fantasie bring pretty, design-led styles with reliable full-bust construction; Panache and Cleo cover everyday and sports; Le Mystère adds a softer, US-style band for anyone who finds UK bands firm. Between them the DD range spans t-shirt, plunge, balconette, strapless and sports.
To make a DD bra last: hand-wash in cool water or use a mesh bag on a delicate cycle, fasten the hooks first so they do not snag, never wring a moulded cup, and lay flat or hang to dry. Heat destroys elastic faster than wear does, so keep them out of the dryer. Rotating three bras rather than wearing one on repeat roughly doubles the life of each.
DD cup bras FAQ
The questions DD shoppers ask most, answered straight.
How big is a DD cup?
There is no single answer, because the cup is relative to the band. A DD on a 28 band holds far less than one on a 44 band. DD sits five steps up from AA and is the last cup where US and UK labels agree. Always read the letter with its band number — a 34DD and a 40DD are very different volumes.
Is a US DD the same as a UK DD?
Yes. DD is the last cup where US and UK sizing use the same label, so a US 34DD and a UK 34DD are the same bra. The two systems only diverge above DD: the US goes DD, DDD, DDDD while the UK goes DD, E, F. That makes DD one of the easiest sizes to shop across both systems.
What is a DD cup in EU sizing?
A DD is an EU E. The continental alphabet has no DD, so the volume that the US and UK call DD is labelled E in EU, French, Italian and Japanese sizing. A US/UK 34DD is an EU 75E. The band also changes number — a 34 band is an EU 75 — but the cup volume is identical.
What cup comes after DD?
The next size up is a US DDD, which is a UK E and an EU F — one body, three labels. If your DD cups are spilling over the top or under the arm on a band that fits, that is the size to try. Going up a cup is different from going up a band, so check the fit before assuming you need a bigger number.
Is a DD cup considered big?
DD is a curvy but mainstream size — one of the most commonly worn cups once women are fitted properly. It is a five-inch difference between bust and underbust, which sits at the entry of full-bust territory rather than deep in it. Whether it looks large depends entirely on the band it sits on, since the same letter holds very different volumes across bands.
What band sizes do you carry in DD cup?
Nine: 28DD, 30DD, 32DD, 34DD, 36DD, 38DD, 40DD, 42DD and 44DD, each its own collection with live stock. 34DD and 36DD are the deepest at 47 styles each; 42DD and 44DD are the smallest at 17 and 16. 28DD is a band most mainstream retailers do not make.
What is sister sizing for a DD?
Sister sizes hold the same cup volume on a different band. If the cup fits but the band is loose or tight, size across: down a band means up a cup, and vice versa. A 34DD holds the same volume as a 32E and a 36D. It is the fastest fix when the cup is right but the band is not.
My band rides up at the back. What should I try?
A riding band means the band is too big, not that the cup is too small. Go down a band and up a cup: if you wear 36DD, try 34E. The cup volume is identical and the firmer band will sit level and carry the weight instead of loading it onto the straps.
How do I measure for a DD cup bra?
Measure your underbust snugly around the ribcage just beneath the bust, then measure around the fullest part of the bust without compressing. The difference gives your cup. If you fall between two bands, take the smaller one and go up a cup. Sizing varies by brand, so check each size chart before ordering.
Can I get a t-shirt bra in DD?
Yes — DD has one of the fullest t-shirt ranges of any curvy cup. It is the last size where seam-free moulded cups still project and contain a full bust properly, so smooth, invisible-under-knits styles are plentiful here. Above DD the moulded range thins and seamed cups take over.
Can you get a strapless bra in DD?
Yes, and DD strapless is a genuine range rather than a token option. Look for a deep, grippy band, silicone lining and light side boning, because the band carries all the support with no straps to help. Getting the band size exactly right matters more in a strapless than in any other style.
Do you have DD sports bras?
Yes. At DD, look for encapsulation — separate cups that hold each breast individually — ideally combined with compression and a wide, firm band. DD is roughly where compression-only sports bras stop controlling movement on their own, so encapsulation is worth prioritising for anything high impact.
What brands make DD bras?
We carry DD from Freya, Fantasie, Panache, Cleo and Le Mystère, among others. Freya and Fantasie lead on design-led everyday and t-shirt styles; Panache and Cleo cover everyday and sports; Le Mystère adds a softer US-style band. Between them they cover t-shirt, plunge, balconette, strapless and sports in DD.
How should a DD cup bra fit?
The band sits snug and level all the way round and carries most of the support. The wire encircles the breast and lies flat on the ribs. The centre gore touches the sternum. The cup edge is smooth with no spillage or wrinkling. The straps sit comfortably without digging. If any of those are off, try a sister size before changing the cup letter.
Fitting guidance here is general. Sizing varies between brands and styles, so check the size chart on each product before ordering.
