D Cup Bras

Two numbers set your size, and the order matters:

• Underbust — measure snugly around the ribcage directly beneath the bust, tape level all the way round. This gives your band.
• Bust — measure around the fullest point, tape parallel to the floor, without compressing.
• Subtract — the difference gives the cup. Around 4 in. is a D in US sizing; 3 in. is a C, 5 in. is a DD.

Measure in an unpadded bra, not bare and not in a heavily moulded style, or the bust figure will read low. If you land between two bands, take the smaller one and go up a cup — a firm band is what stops the straps carrying the weight.

Five checks, in the order that finds problems fastest:

• Band — level front to back, snug on the loosest hook so you have room to tighten as it stretches. Two fingers under the band, no more.
• Wire — should encircle your breast tissue completely and rest on the ribs behind the breast. Wire sitting on tissue means the cup is too small, not that wires do not suit you.
• Centre gore — the piece between the cups should touch the sternum. If it floats, the cup is too shallow.
• Cup edge — smooth against the body. Overflow means size up; wrinkling means size down.
• Straps — carrying support, not weight. Deep grooves mean the band is not doing its job.

Sister sizes hold the same cup volume on a different band. Moving down a band and up a cup keeps the volume identical while tightening the ribcage grip:

• Band too loose in 34D? Try 32DD. Same cup, firmer band.
• Band too tight in 34D? Try 36C. Same cup, looser band.
• The chain runs both ways — 30DDD, 32DD, 34D, 36C and 38B are all one cup volume on five different bands.

This is why a straight jump from 34D to 34DD often fails: it changes the cup without touching the band, when the band was the problem. Sister sizing is also worth trying when a brand runs consistently tight or generous.

D is one of the few letters that stays roughly stable across systems — which is exactly why it causes confusion further up:

• US runs A, B, C, D, DD, DDD, G, H.
• UK runs A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H — more steps, so US DDD maps to UK E or F depending on the brand.
• EU uses the band in centimetres, so a US 34 band is roughly an EU 75.

Several brands we carry are UK-sized. At D itself the systems agree closely, so a UK D and a US D are near enough interchangeable. Above D they diverge, which is where our E cup and DDD collections overlap by design.

The D range spans two different design philosophies. UK full-bust houses — Panache, Cleo and Sculptresse — build in side support and firm bands from D upward, and tend to run true to a firm band. US and European labels such as Le Mystere, Lise Charmel, Montelle, Timpa, Eberjey and Leonisa lean toward moulded smoothness and softer bands. Dominique carries the depth of the bridal and corsetry side of the D range.

To make any of them last: hand-wash in cool water or use a mesh bag on a delicate cycle, fasten the hooks before washing so they do not snag, never wring a moulded cup, and lay flat or hang to dry. Heat destroys elastic faster than wear does, so keep bras out of the dryer entirely. Rotating three bras rather than wearing one on repeat roughly doubles the life of each.
