C Cup Bras

Two numbers set your size, and the order matters:

• Underbust — measure snugly around the ribcage directly beneath the bust, tape level all the way round. This gives your band.
• Bust — measure around the fullest point, tape parallel to the floor, without compressing.
• Subtract — the difference gives the cup. Around 3 in. is a C; 2 in. is a B, 4 in. is a D.

Measure in an unpadded bra rather than bare or in a heavily moulded style, or the bust figure reads low. If you land between two bands, take the smaller one and go up a cup — a firm band is what stops the straps carrying weight they were not designed for.

Five checks, in the order that finds problems fastest:

• Band — level front to back, snug on the loosest hook so you have room to tighten as it stretches. Two fingers underneath, no more.
• Wire — should encircle the breast completely and rest on the ribs behind it. Wire sitting on tissue means the cup is too small, not that wires do not suit you.
• Centre gore — the piece between the cups should touch the sternum. If it floats, the cup is too shallow.
• Cup edge — smooth against the body. Overflow means size up; wrinkling means size down.
• Straps — steadying, not carrying. If they leave marks, the band is failing.

Sister sizes hold the same cup volume on a different band. The C chain runs across five sizes at one volume: 30D, 32C, 34B, 36A are all the same cup on different ribcages.

• Band too loose in 34C? Try 32D. Same cup, firmer band.
• Band too tight in 34C? Try 36B. Same cup, looser band.
• On a 30 band? This is where sister sizing is most useful practically, not just theoretically. Our 30C selection is 10 styles; its sister 32B is 90. If the 32 band is comfortable, you have nine times the choice.

This is also why jumping straight from 34C to 34D often fails: it changes the cup while leaving the band alone, when the band was the actual problem.

C is the safest letter to shop internationally, because every major system agrees on it:

• US, UK and AU all run A, B, C, D identically. A C is a C in all three.
• They diverge above D — UK adds DD, E, FF and GG steps that US sizing does not, which is where conversion charts become necessary.
• EU uses the band in centimetres, so a US 34 band is roughly an EU 75, and the cup letter is broadly comparable at C.

Practical upshot: if you are a C, you can shop a UK-sized or US-sized brand with equal confidence. That stops being true one letter up, which is worth knowing before you move to D.

The C range comes from a different roster than our larger cups. The UK full-bust houses — Panache, Cleo, Sculptresse — begin at D, so C is served by US and European labels instead: Le Mystere for structured everyday, Lise Charmel and Montelle for design-led pieces, Timpa and Eberjey for lightweight and unlined, Leonisa for shaping, and Dominique for the deep bridal and corsetry side. Panache Sports is the exception, carrying sports styles down into C.

Care is what makes the difference between two years and five. Hand-wash in cool water or use a mesh bag on a delicate cycle, fasten the hooks first so they do not snag, never wring a moulded cup, and lay flat or hang to dry. Heat destroys elastic faster than wear does, so keep bras out of the dryer entirely. Rotating three rather than wearing one on repeat roughly doubles the life of each.
