Bra Sized Swimwear: Because S, M, L Was Never Going to Work
You'd never buy a bra in small, medium or large. Yet that's how most swimwear is sold — which is why a D cup ends up choosing between a top that fits her ribcage and one that fits her bust, and never both.
Bra sized swimwear is sized like a bra — 32D, 34DD, 36F — with underwire, structured cups, a proper band and adjustable straps. And a note worth making early: this is about cup size, not body size. A 30F is bra-sized but not plus size; the two are different axes entirely.
What is bra sized swimwear?
Bra sized swimwear is swimwear sold in bra sizes — a band number and a cup letter, like 34DD or 36F — instead of S, M and L. The difference isn't just the label: a bra-sized top is built like a bra. It has underwire (or firm structural seaming), cups moulded to a specific volume, a supportive band with a hook-and-eye fastening, and adjustable straps — so the band carries the weight the way it does on land. Generic S/M/L swimwear scales a single shape up and down, which forces anyone above roughly a D cup to choose between a top that fits her ribcage and one that fits her bust. Crucially, bra-sized is about cup size, not body size: a 30F is bra-sized but not plus size, and a size 20 B cup is plus size but not bra-sized. They're separate axes that often get confused. Bra-sized swim typically runs from about a D cup up through G and beyond, in bikini tops, tankinis and one-pieces, and it's usually sold as separates so your top and bottom can be different sizes.
Bra sized vs. S/M/L vs. plus size
These three get used interchangeably and they shouldn't. Two of them describe your body; only one describes your bust.
| Sizing | What it measures | Support | Best for | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bra sized | Band + cup (34DD, 36F) | Underwire, moulded cups, firm band | A D cup and above, any body size | Bra sized swim |
| S / M / L | One scaled shape | Shelf bra or removable pads | Up to roughly a C cup | All swimwear |
| Plus size | Body size (14, 16, 18, 1X+) | Varies — often shelf, sometimes wired | A fuller figure, any cup | Plus size swim |
| Bra sized and plus size | Both axes at once | Full structure, extended body sizing | A fuller figure and a fuller bust | Plus size swim |
The point that gets missed: a 30F is bra-sized but not plus size, and a size 20 B cup is plus size but not bra-sized. Small frame, full bust is extremely common — and it's exactly who generic swimwear fails.
Bra sized swimwear by style
Every silhouette exists in bra sizing — what changes is how the support is built.
| Style | How it supports | Best for | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underwire bikini top | Wire + moulded cups + hook-and-eye band | The closest thing to your everyday bra | Bra sized swim |
| Balconette / plunge top | Angled wires, side support panels | Shape and lift at a fuller cup | Bra sized swim |
| Underwire tankini | Wired cups plus torso coverage | Support with more coverage | More coverage |
| Underwire one-piece | Wire, seaming and a full torso panel | The most support of any style | One-pieces |
| Halter | Neck ties take some of the load | Extra lift — but check the band still fits | All swimwear |
| High leg / high waist bottoms | Sized separately from the top | Mixing sizes, which is the whole point | High leg |

You know your bra size
Then start there. Bra sized swim uses the same band and cup, so a 34DD top fits like a 34DD bra.
Shop by bra size →Maximum support
An underwire one-piece: wire, seaming and a full torso panel doing the work together.
Shop one-pieces →Small frame, full bust
The combination generic swimwear serves worst — and precisely what bra sizing solves.
Shop bra sized swim →Fuller figure too
If you need extended body sizing as well as cup support, start in plus size swim.
Shop plus size →More coverage
Tankinis and higher-cut styles with the same wired support underneath.
Shop more coverage →Match your bra drawer
Shopping a G cup? The same support rules apply on land — see our full-bust bras.
Shop full-bust bras →Nobody buys a bra in medium. The only reason swimwear gets away with it is that we've all been trained to accept a top that fits either the ribcage or the bust — and then blame ourselves.

What it is, how it's built, sizing and separates, choosing by cup, and care.
01Why S, M, L fails a full bust+
Generic swim sizing takes one shape and scales it. That works until your bust and your ribcage stop being proportional to each other:
- A large fits your bust but drowns your ribcage — so the band rides up and supports nothing.
- A small fits your ribcage but not your bust — so you spill, and the straps take all the weight.
- Shelf bras and removable pads are shape, not support. They don't hold a D cup, let alone an F.
- The tell: if you've ever adjusted your top every time you stood up, that's not you — it's the sizing system.
02How bra sized swimwear is built+
It's a bra that happens to be waterproof. Look for all four:
- Underwire — or firm structural seaming — enclosing the whole breast and sitting flat against the ribcage.
- Moulded or seamed cups built to a specific volume, rather than a triangle of fabric.
- A supportive band with a hook-and-eye fastening, so it can actually be tightened. The band does most of the work — in water as on land.
- Adjustable straps, ideally wider ones, plus a convertible or racerback option.
Wire in swimwear isn't about being restrictive; it's what lets the band carry the weight so your shoulders don't have to.
03Sizing, separates & sister sizes+
Start from your bra size and treat the top and bottom as two different purchases:
- Use your current bra size as the starting point — the band and cup mean the same thing here.
- Buy separates. Your top and bottom rarely want the same size, and bra-sized swim is usually sold apart for exactly that reason.
- Sister sizes work here too. If the cup fits but the band doesn't, go down a band and up a cup — or the reverse. 34DD ≈ 32DDD ≈ 36D.
- Allow for wet fabric. Swim fabric relaxes slightly in water, so a band that's merely "fine" in the fitting room will be loose in the sea. Snug is correct.

04Choosing by cup size+
The bigger the cup, the more the construction has to do:
- D–DD: most wired bikini tops and balconettes work well. This is where bra sizing starts to matter. See DD cup.
- DDD / F: look for side support panels and a three-hook band. See F cup.
- G and above: wider straps, deeper bands and full cups. A one-piece or tankini often outperforms a bikini top here. See G cup.
- Halter styles can be excellent for lift, but check the band is still doing its job rather than hanging from your neck.
05Caring for structured swimwear+
Wired swim costs more than a scrap of jersey and lasts far longer if you treat it properly:
- Rinse in cool water immediately after swimming — chlorine, salt and sunscreen destroy elastane.
- Hand-wash in cool water with the hooks fastened, and never wring the cups — wringing is what breaks moulded foam.
- Reshape the cups and lay flat in the shade to dry. Never the dryer, never a radiator, never direct sun.
- Rotate suits so each recovers between wears, and avoid sitting on rough surfaces that snag the fabric.
Bra sized swimwear FAQ
The questions full-bust swim shoppers ask most, answered straight.
What is bra sized swimwear?
Swimwear sold in bra sizes — a band number and cup letter like 34DD or 36F — instead of S, M and L. It's built like a bra too: underwire or firm seaming, cups moulded to a specific volume, a supportive hook-and-eye band, and adjustable straps.
Is bra sized swimwear the same as plus size swimwear?
No — they're different axes. Bra sized is about your cup; plus size is about your body. A 30F is bra-sized but not plus size; a size 20 B cup is plus size but not bra-sized. Some suits are both. Browse plus size swimwear if you need extended body sizing.
What size swimsuit should I buy for a big bust?
Start from your bra size rather than a letter size. If you wear a 34DD bra, buy a 34DD top — the band and cup mean the same thing. Above roughly a D cup, S/M/L sizing forces you to choose between fitting your ribcage and fitting your bust.
Do I need an underwire swimsuit?
Above about a D cup, it makes the biggest single difference. Wire lets the band carry the weight rather than your shoulders, and it holds shape when the fabric is wet and heavy. Firm structural seaming can do a similar job on some designs.
What are the best bathing suits for a large bust?
The ones sized by bra size. Look for four things: underwire enclosing the whole breast, moulded or seamed cups, a hook-and-eye band you can tighten, and adjustable straps. An underwire one-piece or tankini gives the most support; a wired balconette bikini gives the most shape.
Can I buy the top and bottom in different sizes?
Yes, and you probably should — that's much of the point of bra sized swim. It's usually sold as separates precisely because a 34DD top rarely pairs with the same letter size on the bottom.
What's the difference between a shelf bra and a bra sized top?
A shelf bra is a strip of elastic and a pocket for a pad — it shapes, it doesn't support. A bra sized top has wire, cups built to a volume, and a band that fastens and tightens. Above a C cup that's the difference between a suit you adjust all day and one you forget about.
What cup sizes does bra sized swimwear come in?
Typically from around a D cup up through F, G and beyond, across a range of bands. That's the range where generic sizing stops working, which is why bra sizing exists at all.
Is there swimwear for a G cup?
Yes — look for wider straps, a deeper band, full cups and side support. At a G cup, an underwire one-piece or tankini often outperforms a bikini top. The same support rules apply on land; see our G cup bras.
How should a bra sized swim top fit?
Like a well-fitting bra: the band snug and level without riding up, the wire enclosing the breast and lying flat on the ribcage, no spillage or gaping, and straps that don't dig. Remember swim fabric relaxes when wet — snug in the fitting room is correct.
Do sister sizes work for swimwear?
Yes, the same way they do for bras. If the cup fits but the band doesn't, go down a band and up a cup — or up a band and down a cup. A 34DD is close to a 32DDD and a 36D. It's also the best move when your size is out of stock.
Is a tankini good for a full bust?
An underwire tankini is one of the better options — you get wired cups and a real band plus torso coverage, and unlike a one-piece you can still size the bottom separately. Browse more coverage styles.
Why is bra sized swimwear more expensive?
Because it's engineered rather than cut. Wire, moulded cups, side support panels, hook-and-eye bands and a full grade of band-and-cup combinations all cost more to make than one shape scaled up and down. It also lasts longer and fits, which is rather the point.
How do I stop my swim top riding up?
Ride-up means the band is too loose — the single most common fit error, in swim and in bras. Tighten it, or size down the band and up the cup. If you're loosening the straps to compensate, that's the giveaway: straps are the fine-tune, the band is the support.
How do I care for underwire swimwear?
Rinse in cool water immediately after swimming, hand-wash gently with the hooks fastened, never wring the cups, reshape them, and lay flat in the shade to dry. Chlorine, salt, sunscreen and heat are what kill elastane — and the wire outlives the fabric every time.
