34DD Bras: A Complete Size, Finally

Unlike a cup letter on its own, 34DD is a whole size — so we can be specific. It means a 34-inch underbust and a bust roughly five inches larger, around 39 inches. That's it. No "it depends."

This edit gathers 34DD bras across every style — t-shirt, push-up, plunge, strapless, sports and minimizer. Below: what a 34DD actually measures, your sister sizes (32DDD and 36D), and how to tell whether 34DD is really your size. For the wider size, see DD cup bras.

Quick Answer

What is a 34DD bra size?

A 34DD means your underbust (ribcage) measures about 34 inches and your bust measures about 5 inches more — roughly 39 inches. The number is the band; the letters are the cup, and the cup describes the difference between those two measurements rather than an absolute size. That's why a 34DD and a 40DD are both "DD" but are not the same bra — the cup grows with the band. On the ladder, 34DD is one cup above 34D (a 4-inch difference) and one cup below 34DDD (6 inches). In UK and European sizing the same size is written 34E, because US sizing doubles letters (D, DD, DDD) where UK sizing continues the alphabet (D, DD, E, F) — so a 34DD and a 34E are the same bra. Your sister sizes are 32DDD and 36D: same cup volume, different band. If the cup fits but the band doesn't, those are the two to try.

34DD in numbers

Because 34DD is a complete size, it has actual measurements — something a cup letter alone can never give you.

Size Underbust (band) Bust (approx.) Difference Shop
34C ~34 inches ~37 inches 3 inches C cup
34D ~34 inches ~38 inches 4 inches D cup
34DD (= 34E) ~34 inches ~39 inches 5 inches You are here
34DDD (= 34F) ~34 inches ~40 inches 6 inches F / DDD cup
34G ~34 inches ~42 inches 8 inches G cup

These are guide measurements using the modern (no add-on) method. Brands vary, so always check the individual size chart — our bra size guide has the full walkthrough and international conversions.

34DD sister sizes: 32DDD and 36D

Sister sizes hold the same cup volume on a different band. If the cup fits but the band feels wrong — or your size is out of stock — these are the two to reach for.

Size Band feel Cup volume Try it when Shop
32DDD Tighter band Same as 34DD Your 34 band rides up or feels loose DDD / F cup
34DD Your band Your cup The band sits snug and level 34DD bras
36D Looser band Same as 34DD Your 34 band digs or feels tight D cup
34E (UK) Same band Same cup Always — it's the same size, relabelled E cup

The rule: go down a band, up a cup — or up a band, down a cup. Sister sizing solves band problems, not cup problems. If you're spilling or gaping, change the cup instead.

Lift with support

Push-up styles cut for a DD bust — angled padding plus a 34 band firm enough to actually hold it.

03

Sports support that works

At a DD cup, compression alone flattens without holding. Look for encapsulation and a wide 34 band.

Band rides up?

That's the classic sign the band is too loose. Try 32DDD — a tighter band, same cup volume.

Band too tight?

Go the other way: 36D gives you a looser band while holding the same cup volume.

Spilling over the top?

That's a cup problem, not a band one — you're likely a 34DDD (34F in UK sizing).

A 34 band that rides up isn't a cup problem — it's a band problem, and sister sizing fixes it in one move. Spillage is the opposite. Knowing which is which saves you three returns.

The complete 34DD guide

The measurements, sister sizing, whether 34DD is really your size, styles, and care.

01What 34DD actually measures+

A complete bra size is two numbers pretending to be a number and a letter:

  • 34 = your underbust. Measure snugly around your ribcage, directly under the bust, level all the way round. About 34 inches.
  • DD = a 5-inch difference. Measure loosely around the fullest part of the bust — about 39 inches. The gap between the two is what the letters describe.
  • The cup is relative. This is why a 34DD and a 40DD aren't the same bra: same letters, very different volume, because the cup scales with the band.
  • 34DD = 34E in UK and European sizing. Same bra, different alphabet.
02Sister sizes — and when to use them+

Your sister sizes are 32DDD and 36D. Both hold roughly the same cup volume as a 34DD; what changes is the band.

  • Band rides up your back? It's too loose. Go down a band and up a cup: 32DDD.
  • Band digs or you can't breathe? Too tight. Go up a band and down a cup: 36D.
  • Cup spilling or gaping? That's not a sister-size problem — change the cup, not the band. Spilling means 34DDD; gaping means 34D.
  • Out of stock? A sister size is the closest substitute you'll find — far closer than the same letters on a different band.

The rule in one line: down a band, up a cup — or up a band, down a cup.

03Is 34DD really your size?+

Four checks, in order of how often they're the culprit:

  • The band. It should sit snug and level, parallel to the floor, on the loosest hook when new. If it rides up at the back, size down the band — this is the most common error by a wide margin.
  • The cups. They should contain everything with no spillage at the top or side and no gaping. Spilling → 34DDD. Gaping → 34D.
  • The centre. On a wired bra, the centre panel should tack flat against your sternum. If it floats, the cup is too small.
  • The straps. Two fingers should slide under. If they're carrying the weight or leaving grooves, tighten the band first — straps are the fine-tune, not the support.
04What to look for in a 34DD+

At a DD cup, construction is what separates a bra you tolerate from one you forget:

  • A firm band — it supplies most of the support, so a 34 band should feel snug rather than gentle.
  • Underwire that encloses the whole breast — sitting flat on the ribcage, not on tissue.
  • Wider, adjustable straps — to spread weight rather than cut in. A racerback does this especially well.
  • Three hooks or more — band depth means stability at this cup.
  • Full cups or side support — to contain and shape rather than spill.
05Styles, swim & care+

Styles: everything is made in 34DD — smooth t-shirt bras for every day, push-up for lift, plunge and balconette for necklines, DD sports bras for workouts, strapless for occasions, minimizer for a smoother line, and nursing for pregnancy and beyond.

Swim: the same rules apply in the water — a DD bust wants underwire, a firm band and real cup structure rather than a shelf. Browse swimwear.

Care: hand-wash in cool water or use a mesh bag on a delicate cycle with the hooks fastened, never wring the cups, and lay flat or hang to dry. At a DD the elastic and wire work harder than on a smaller bra — heat and the dryer shorten a bra's life faster than anything else.

34DD bras FAQ

The questions 34DD shoppers ask most, answered straight.

What is a 34DD bra size?

A 34DD means an underbust measurement of about 34 inches and a bust about 5 inches larger — roughly 39 inches. The number is the band and the letters describe the difference between those two measurements, not an absolute size.

What are the measurements for a 34DD?

Roughly a 34-inch underbust and a 39-inch bust — a 5-inch difference. These are guide measurements using the modern no-add-on method; brands vary, so always check the individual size chart before buying.

What are the sister sizes for a 34DD?

32DDD and 36D. Both hold roughly the same cup volume as a 34DD — only the band changes. If your 34 band rides up it's too loose, so try 32DDD; if it digs, try 36D. Sister sizing fixes band problems, not cup problems.

Is a 34DD the same as a 34E?

Yes. US sizing doubles letters (D, DD, DDD) while UK and European sizing continues the alphabet (D, DD, E, F), so a 34DD and a 34E are the same bra. You'll see both labels depending on the brand — browse our E cup range for E-labelled styles.

What is the difference between a 34D and a 34DD?

One cup — about an inch. A 34D is roughly a 38-inch bust (4-inch difference); a 34DD is roughly 39 inches (5-inch difference). Same band, one cup up. If your 34D is spilling at the top, 34DD is usually the fix. See our D cup range.

What comes after a 34DD?

A 34DDD, which UK brands label 34F — roughly a 40-inch bust, a 6-inch difference. If your 34DD cup is spilling at the top or sides while the band still fits, that's your next size. See our DDD / F cup range.

What does a 34DD look like?

There's no single look — the same size sits differently depending on your frame, height, torso length and breast shape. What's fixed are the measurements: a 34-inch underbust and a roughly 39-inch bust. That's the useful part when you're shopping.

Is 34DD a big bra size?

It's a fuller cup on an average band, and one of the most commonly worn sizes. The letters can look dramatic, but DD sits in the middle of the range — there are several cups above it. What matters far more than the label is whether the band and cup actually fit.

Why does my 34DD band ride up at the back?

The band is too loose — by far the most common fit error. The band supplies most of the support and should sit level, parallel to the floor, on the loosest hook when new. Try your sister size 32DDD: a tighter band with the same cup volume.

My 34DD cup is spilling — what size should I try?

Spillage is a cup problem, so change the cup rather than the band: try a 34DDD (34F in UK sizing). Don't reach for a sister size here — sister sizing solves a band that's too tight or too loose, not a cup that's too small.

How do I measure to check I'm a 34DD?

Measure snugly around your ribcage just under the bust — about 34 inches gives you the band. Then measure loosely around the fullest part of the bust; about 39 inches, a 5-inch difference, indicates a DD. Our bra size guide has the full walkthrough.

What is the best sports bra for a 34DD?

At a DD cup, look for encapsulation — separate structured cups — rather than compression alone, plus a wide, firm 34 band to control bounce. Compression flattens a fuller bust without truly supporting it. See our DD sports bras.

Can you get a strapless bra in 34DD?

Yes — strapless works at a DD when the design is right: a deep, grippy band with silicone lining, and often light side boning. The 34 band matters more than usual here, because once the straps are gone the band carries all the support. Browse strapless bras.

What styles come in 34DD?

All of them — t-shirt, push-up, plunge, balconette, strapless, sports, minimizer, racerback and nursing. 34DD is a well-served size, so you're not limited to full-coverage styles the way you might be further up the range.

How should a 34DD bra fit?

The 34 band should sit snug and level without riding up, the underwire should enclose the breast and lie flat on the ribcage, the centre should tack flat against your sternum, the straps shouldn't dig, and the cups should contain everything without gaping or spillage.
