36E pairs a 36-inch band with a E cup, which works out at about a 6-inch gap between underbust and bust. Sizing varies more between brands than most people expect, which is why two bras both marked 36E can fit quite differently.
How a 36E should fit
Support at 36E comes from structure rather than tightness. Look for a band with three or four hooks, wider side wings to stop the cup pulling forward, and cups seamed in sections rather than moulded from a single piece.
Sister sizes to try if 36E isn't right
- Band feels loose but the cup is right — try 34F
- Band is comfortable but you're spilling over — go up to 36F
- Band digs in — 38DD gives the same cup volume with more room
Best 36E styles
Full-coverage and balconette shapes are the most reliable at 36E. If you want something under a t-shirt, choose a moulded cup with a seam beneath the bust rather than a completely smooth one. For sport, an encapsulation bra that supports each breast separately will beat a compression style at this size.
