In a 38E, the 38 refers to your ribcage measurement and the E to a bust roughly 6 inches larger than it. If you've been fitted in a US brand and are shopping a European label, expect the letter to shift — the volume stays the same, the notation doesn't.
How a 38E should fit
At E cup the band needs to be firm, not merely snug. A 38E should fasten on the loosest hook with about two fingers' resistance, leaving room to tighten as the elastic relaxes over six to nine months of wear.
Sister sizes to try if 38E isn't right
- Band feels loose but the cup is right — try 36F
- Band is comfortable but you're spilling over — go up to 38F
- Band digs in — 40DD gives the same cup volume with more room
Best 38E styles
Full-coverage and balconette shapes are the most reliable at 38E. If you want something under a t-shirt, choose a moulded cup with a seam beneath the bust rather than a completely smooth one. For sport, an encapsulation bra that supports each breast separately will beat a compression style at this size.
