A 40E means a 40-inch band with a E cup — roughly a 6-inch difference between your underbust and your bust measurement. Cup letters are not consistent between markets: UK-sized brands like Panache run a different ladder to US labels, so your 40E may sit a letter along depending on who made it.

How a 40E should fit

Support at 40E comes from structure rather than tightness. Look for a band with three or four hooks, wider side wings to stop the cup pulling forward, and cups seamed in sections rather than moulded from a single piece.

• Band feels loose but the cup is right — try 38F
• Band is comfortable but you're spilling over — go up to 40F

Best 40E styles

Full-coverage and balconette shapes are the most reliable at 40E. If you want something under a t-shirt, choose a moulded cup with a seam beneath the bust rather than a completely smooth one. For sport, an encapsulation bra that supports each breast separately will beat a compression style at this size.
