How a 48A should fit

The band carries nearly all the support, so it should feel firm on the loosest hook and sit level all the way round. At A cup the more common fitting error is a band that's too loose paired with a cup that's too big — if the centre gore lifts away from your sternum, the cup is oversized, not the band.

Sister sizes to try

  • Band loose, cup fine — try 46B
  • Cup overflowing — try 48B

In a 48A, the 48 refers to your ribcage measurement and the A to a bust roughly 1 inches larger than it. If you've been fitted in a US brand and are shopping a European label, expect the letter to shift — the volume stays the same, the notation doesn't.

How a 48A should fit

A well-fitted 48A sits flat against the ribcage with no gap under the cup. Straps should take almost no weight; if you're tightening them to feel supported, the band is doing too little and you likely want a smaller band.

Sister sizes to try if 48A isn't right

  • Band feels loose but the cup is right — try 46B
  • Band is comfortable but you're spilling over — go up to 48B

Best 48A styles

Balconette and plunge shapes suit a A cup well, and a lightly lined cup adds shape under fine knitwear without padding it out. Bralettes work here in a way they don't at fuller cup sizes, because there's less weight to support.
