Where it fits
This is bridal and black-tie territory. A strapless gown needs a foundation that supports from the band rather than the straps it doesn't have, and that is precisely what a bustier does. Also useful under fitted tailoring where a bra and shaper separately would create two lines instead of none.
Fit notes
Structured pieces should feel firm, not tight, and should not require pulling up during wear. Size on your bra measurements. For strapless styles a snug band is essential — this is the one place where sizing up defeats the purpose.
