A 34B is a 34-inch band with a B cup — meaning your underbust measures about 34 inches (86 cm) and the fullest part of your bust measures about 36 inches (91 cm). They are two separate measurements doing two separate jobs, which is why 34B fits nothing like 32B even though both are B cups.
And the thing most people actually want to know: no, 34B is not flat. Flat is AA or A, where the difference is zero to one inch. What 34B Breasts Actually Look Like
The measurements give you a 34-inch ribcage and a 36-inch bust. What that looks like on a body is a harder question, and the honest answer is that it varies more than most guides admit.
Two people can both be correctly measured at 34B and look noticeably different, for three reasons that have nothing to do with size:
Root width
The root is the footprint where breast tissue attaches to your chest wall. A wide root spreads the same volume across more of the chest, reading as flatter and broader. A narrow root concentrates it, reading as fuller and more projected. Identical volume, different silhouette — and it is the single biggest reason two 34Bs look unalike.
Projection versus spread
Some shapes sit forward from the chest; others sit closer and wider. This determines which cup shapes work: a projected 34B fills a moulded cup neatly, while a shallower, wider 34B may gape at the top of that same cup and fit far better in a seamed or stretch-lace style.
Tissue composition and placement
Firmer tissue holds a higher, rounder shape. Softer tissue settles lower. Breasts also sit differently on different torsos — higher or lower on the chest wall, closer together or further apart. All of this is normal variation, and none of it changes your size.
Which leads to the useful conclusion: 34B is a measurement, not a look. If you have been comparing yourself to photos of other people labelled 34B and concluding your body is wrong, the photos were never the standard. The tape measure is.
Is 34B Small? The Honest Answer
Three separate things get tangled together in this question, and separating them helps.
Statistically, 34B sits in the small-to-average range. The most commonly cited US average is larger — usually reported as 34DD or 36DD — but that figure has climbed steadily over two decades, and the main driver is better fitting rather than changing bodies. A great many people previously wearing a 36B were always a 34D. So the "average" is partly a measurement artefact.
Practically, 34B is one of the best sizes to shop. It is stocked almost universally, offered in nearly every style, and rarely sold out. Anyone in a 30F or a 44DD will tell you that availability is worth a great deal.
Visually, it depends entirely on your frame. The same 34B on a narrow-shouldered, small-framed person reads proportionally larger than on a broad-framed person. Proportion is what the eye registers, not the number on the tag — which is why comparing your size to someone else's tells you almost nothing.
34B is not flat chested
This comes up constantly, so it is worth stating plainly. Flat corresponds to AA or A — a difference of zero to one inch between ribcage and bust. A B cup is a 2-inch difference, which is a clear, distinct shape. If you are a 34B and have wondered whether you count as flat, the measurement answers it: you do not.
And a practical note if the concern is about appearance under clothing: what reads as "flat" is usually a fit problem rather than a size one. A cup that wrinkles because it is too large, or a band riding up and dragging the cups with it, both flatten the silhouette. A correctly fitted 34B does not.

A cup letter is a difference, not a volume
This is the single most useful thing to understand about bra sizing, and it explains almost every confusing comparison. B does not describe a fixed amount of tissue. It describes a 2-inch gap between two measurements. Two inches more than a 30-inch ribcage is a smaller quantity than two inches more than a 40-inch ribcage — but both are B cups.
The same cup letter across three bands. The band grows visibly; the cup grows too, just less obviously. This is why a 38B holds more than a 32B despite sharing a letter.
Cup volume grades up roughly 15% per band step. Across the B cup range that compounds into a real difference:

34B Compared to Every Size People Confuse It With

34B vs 34C
Not the same, and the difference is only the cup. Both have a 34-inch band, so the ribcage fit is identical. 34B is a 2-inch difference; 34C is 3 inches — one cup size more volume. If your 34B spills at the top or side, 34C is the fix. If it wrinkles or gapes, 34A is.
34B vs 32B
Cup volume is close; band fit is not. The 32 band is two inches tighter around the ribcage — that is what you will feel. The 34B cup is marginally larger because cups grade with band, but the practical difference is grip. If your 34 band rides up your back, 32B is usually the answer.
34B vs 36B
36B is bigger. Two inches more band and a slightly larger cup. If a 34 band digs or leaves deep marks, 36B is the more comfortable direction — though consider 36A first if the cups already fit, since the sister relationship preserves volume.
34B vs 32C
Neither is bigger. They hold approximately the same cup volume, which is precisely what makes them sister sizes. 34B has the wider band and smaller letter; 32C has the tighter band and larger letter. Same volume, redistributed. If a bra you want is only stocked in 32C, it will likely fit.
34B vs 34A
Identical band, one cup less volume — a 1-inch difference rather than 2. Wrinkling or hollow space at the top of your 34B cups is the signal to try 34A. Note that this is a cup change rather than a sister size; the volume genuinely decreases.

Sister sizes share approximately the same cup volume across different band widths. Go down a band and up a cup letter, or up a band and down a letter, and the volume stays roughly constant.

Measure your bust
Keep the tape at the same level and bring it around the fullest part of the bust. Snug, never compressing. For a 34B this lands around 36 inches (91 cm).
Subtract
Bust minus underbust gives your cup letter. 1 inch is an A, 2 inches is a B, 3 is a C, 4 is a D. A 2-inch difference on a 34 band is a 34B.

The band sits level all the way round
Parallel to the floor, front to back, and firm enough not to slide when you raise your arms. Riding up at the back means too loose. Deep marks mean too tight. The band carries about 80% of the support, so this is the check that matters most.
Snug on the loosest hook
A new bra should fit on the outermost hook, leaving the tighter rows as adjustment room for when the elastic relaxes over months. If it only works on the tightest hook when new, size down to 32C.
No spillage, no wrinkling
Nothing should overflow the top, sides or underarm. Nor should there be hollow space or wrinkled fabric in the cup. Spillage means go up to 34C; wrinkling means down to 34A.
The centre gore lies flat
The panel between the cups should touch your sternum. If it floats away, the cup is too small for that bra — or the cup shape does not match your root. Try a different style before changing size.
Straps support without digging
Two fingers should slide under easily. Digging straps mean the band is not doing its share, and tightening them makes it worse. Fix the band first, always.
The strap test
Fasten on the loosest hook, then slip both straps off your shoulders. A correctly fitted bra holds almost everything without them. If it all drops, the band is too loose — and no amount of strap adjustment fixes that.
Common Sizes, Rare Sizes, and Why It Matters
People often ask which sizes are rarest. The honest answer is that rarity in bras is mostly a retail phenomenon rather than a biological one.
What is genuinely hard to find is the extremes of the band-to-cup ratio: very small bands with very large cups (28H, 30G) and very large bands with very small cups (46A, 48B). Both exist in reasonable numbers among actual people. Neither is widely manufactured, because mass-market production concentrates on the middle of the distribution.
Which is the practical advantage of 34B. It sits in the densest part of that distribution, so it is stocked almost everywhere, in almost every style, at almost every price. If you have ever helped someone in a 30FF shop for a bra, you will appreciate what that is worth.
Why "what cup size is a handful" has no answer
It comes up often enough to address. There is no answer, for the same reason there is no fixed volume for a B cup: the letter describes a difference, not an amount. A B cup on a 30 band and a B cup on a 42 band are very different quantities of tissue. Add that hands vary as much as bodies, and the comparison collapses entirely. Your size is the one that fits, and nothing about it is measured against anyone else.
