What is a sleep bra, and what makes one good?
A sleep bra holds breast tissue in position while you are lying down, which is a completely different mechanical job from resisting gravity while you are upright. Standing, the load runs downward and a day bra answers it with a firm band, wires and lift. Reclining, that load runs sideways, and none of those features help: a wire shaped for the chest wall lifts off on one edge and presses in on the other the moment you turn onto your side. So a sleep bra is wireless by design, not by preference. What it needs instead is soft lateral containment, a wide band that stays put without compressing, flat or bonded seams, and no hardware anywhere you might lie on it.
Most advice about sleeping in a bra argues about whether you should. That question has a short answer, and it is not very interesting: it is a comfort decision, and the health claims on both sides are unfounded.
The more useful question is what to buy if you have already decided you sleep better with one. That turns out to hinge on a single fact about lying down that almost nothing in a normal bra is designed for.

Think about what an underwire actually is. It is a curved length of metal or rigid polymer shaped to follow the line where breast tissue meets the chest wall, and it works because that line is stable when you are upright. Turn onto your side and the tissue shifts laterally, but the wire cannot. The result is that one edge of the wire lifts away from the ribcage while the other presses into it, concentrating pressure along a short section rather than distributing it around the curve. Over eight hours that is enough to wake people up, and it is the single most common reason someone concludes they cannot sleep in a bra at all.
Moulded cups fail for a related reason. A moulded cup holds a fixed shape, and it holds it whether or not tissue is currently filling it. Upright, the shape and the tissue match. Reclining, the tissue moves toward the mattress and the cup stays where it is, which leaves an air gap on one side and a fold pressing in on the other.

This also explains why the discomfort is worst for side sleepers and often absent for people who sleep on their back. On your back the load runs into the chest rather than across it, tissue settles roughly symmetrically, and almost any soft bra is comfortable. Side sleeping is where the design problem lives, and since most people spend a good part of the night on one side or the other, it is the case worth buying for.

The two get used interchangeably and they are not the same garment. A bralette is a lightweight day piece built to be worn upright, often with a narrow band and decorative straps. A sleep bra is built for a body that changes position twenty or thirty times a night. Four differences carry most of that.

There is one reliable way to know whether a sleep bra fits, and it takes no measuring. Wear it overnight, then look in the mirror before you dress. If you can see indentation lines across the ribcage, under the arm or over the shoulder, the bra is too tight, too narrow, or both, regardless of how comfortable it felt going to bed. How to Choose One
Rule Out Anything With a Wire
This is the first filter and it eliminates most of the market. A wire is shaped for an upright load path and cannot follow tissue that has shifted sideways. Some brands market underwired styles as suitable for lounging or napping, which may be true for an hour on a sofa and is not true for a full night.
Size the Band for Stability, Not Grip
Where the bra is sold in band and cup sizing, buy your true measured size. Where it is sold in S through 4X, size by band measurement rather than bust, because the band determines whether it stays in place. If you fall between sizes, go up. A sleep bra that has to grip in order to stay put is the wrong bra.
Check the Back Panel Before Anything Else
Run a hand over the back of the garment. Hooks, sliders, raised seams and tags all become pressure points once your weight is on them. This is a ten-second check and it eliminates a surprising number of otherwise good candidates.
Test the Turn
Put it on, lie down on your back, then roll onto each side. Watch what the band does. If it rides up toward the shoulder blades during the turn, it will spend the night migrating, and you will wake with it somewhere around your chest. A wide band in a soft knit should stay more or less where you put it.
Judge It in the Morning, Not at Bedtime
Comfort at the point of putting a bra on tells you very little about comfort seven hours later. Give any new sleep bra three or four nights before deciding, and use the marks test in the mirror rather than how it felt when you got into bed.
Fabric Matters More Overnight Than It Does by Day
A fabric worn for three hours under a jumper and a fabric worn for eight hours against bare skin under a duvet are being asked to do different things. Breathability moves from a nice-to-have to the main consideration, because body temperature drops and rises across a sleep cycle and a fabric that traps heat against the chest interferes with that.
Modal and bamboo viscose are the two best options. Both are soft enough to sit against skin indefinitely, both move moisture away rather than holding it, and both keep that softness through repeated washing better than cotton does. Cotton blends with a small percentage of elastane are the next best thing and considerably cheaper.
Two materials to avoid specifically for overnight wear. Polyester satin looks appealing and traps heat against the chest, which is the opposite of what you want during the part of the night when core temperature is falling. Unlined lace is worse: it is perfectly comfortable across an evening and becomes abrasive somewhere around hour four, because skin under sustained light friction gets more sensitive rather than less.
Three Claims Worth Setting Aside
It does not. Breast shape over time is driven by genetics, skin elasticity, hormonal life stages, pregnancy and changes in body composition. No garment worn day or night alters those. Buy a sleep bra because it is more comfortable than not wearing one, which is a perfectly good reason, and disregard the shape claims entirely.
This claim circulates persistently and is not supported by evidence. It traces to a single popular book from the 1990s rather than to research, and studies looking at the question since have found no association. If you are comfortable in a sleep bra, there is no reason from this direction to stop.
Overnight, tightness is the problem rather than the solution. There is no downward load to resist, so compression buys nothing and costs comfort, circulation at the band, and quality of sleep. The correct target is stable and unnoticeable. If you are aware of the bra at any point during the night, it is too tight.
People arrive convinced they cannot sleep in a bra. Almost always they have only ever tried sleeping in a day bra, which is a bit like deciding you cannot sleep in clothes after a night in a suit.
