A complete bra size is two measurements wearing a disguise:
- 34 = your underbust. Measure snugly around your ribcage, directly under the bust, level all the way round. About 34 inches.
- DDD = a 6-inch difference. Measure loosely around the fullest part of the bust — about 40 inches. The gap between the two is what the letters describe.
- The cup is relative. A 34DDD and a 40DDD share letters but not volume, because the cup scales with the band.

- The cups. They should contain everything with no spillage or gaping. Spilling → 34DDDD/34G. Gaping → 34DD.
- The centre. On a wired bra the centre panel should tack flat against your sternum. If it floats, the cup is too small.
- The straps. Two fingers should slide under. If they're carrying the weight, tighten the band first — straps are the fine-tune, not the support.
