What "36D" Actually Means

A bra size is two measurements read together. The band — the 36 — is the circumference of your ribcage directly under the bust, rounded to the nearest even inch. The cup — the D — is not a volume in its own right; it is the difference between your bust at its fullest and that band. Four inches of difference is a D cup. So a 36D describes a bust roughly four inches fuller than a 36-inch ribcage.

Because the cup letter is relative to the band, the same letter means different volumes on different frames. A 36D holds more than a 34D and less than a 38D, though all three are "D" cups. This is exactly why sister sizing works, and why 36D and 34DD hold the same cup — a point worth understanding before you shop, because it doubles your options.

36D in Inches and Centimetres

This is the most-asked practical question about the size, so here it is in full. A 36D corresponds to a 36-inch (91 cm) underbust and a 40-inch (102 cm) bust — a 4-inch (10 cm) difference.

36D Sister Sizes — 34DD and 38C

Bras come in fixed sizes; bodies don't. When your band measurement sits between sizes, or your size is out of stock in a style you want, sister sizing gives you equivalent options holding the same cup volume on a different band. Go down one band and up one cup, or up one band and down one cup. For a 36D, that's 34DD (sister-down) and 38C (sister-up).

36D vs 34DD — Which Is Bigger?

Neither. They hold the same cup volume. 36D and 34DD are sister sizes: the 36D sits on a two-inch larger band and drops one cup letter to compensate, so cup capacity comes out equivalent. The only difference is how the band fits your ribcage.

This confuses people because DD looks like a bigger letter than D, so a 34DD reads as larger at a glance. It isn't. A cup letter is only meaningful alongside its band — change one and the other has to move to hold volume steady.

Practically: if your 36D band rides up at the back, 34DD is the fix — same cup, snugger band. If your 36D band digs in or leaves deep marks, go the other way to 38C.

The rule underneath all of it: comparisons on the same band are genuine cup-size differences. Comparisons across bands are usually sister sizes holding the same cup. What Does a 36D Look Like?

Because a cup letter is defined relative to the band, the same letter reads differently on different frames — a D on a 30 band and a D on a 40 band are proportionally similar but hold quite different volumes. 36D in US, UK, EU and International Sizing

D is the last cup letter US and UK sizing write identically. Above DD the ladders split — the US continues DDD and DDDD while the UK moves to E, F, FF and G — but at D there is no translation needed. Only the band number changes abroad.
