A 36B is a B cup on a 36-inch band. What "36B" Actually Means
A bra size is two measurements read together. The band — the 36 — is the circumference of your ribcage directly under the bust, rounded to the nearest even inch. The cup — the B — is not a volume in its own right; it is the difference between your bust at its fullest and that band. Two inches of difference is a B cup. So a 36B describes a bust roughly two inches fuller than a 36-inch ribcage.
Because the cup letter is relative, the same letter means different volumes on different frames. A 36B holds more than a 34B and less than a 38B, though all three are "B" cups. At 36B specifically, the band is wide and the cup is modest — a ratio that puts almost all the fit burden on the band.

Two numbers define the size. Treat them as starting points — cup depth and wire width vary between brands — but they are what the label is built on.

Take the underbust snug, at the end of a normal breath out. A band measured loosely or on a full inhale reads one to two inches large — and an inflated band pushes the cup letter down. This is the single most frequent reason someone lands in a 36B when a 34C is the better fit. If your 36B band rides up at the back, that is almost certainly what has happened.
36B Sister Sizes — 34C and 38A
Bras come in fixed sizes; bodies don't. When your band measurement sits between sizes, or your size is out of stock in a style you want, sister sizing gives you equivalent options holding the same cup volume on a different band. Go down one band and up one cup, or up one band and down one cup. For a 36B, that's 34C (sister-down) and 38A (sister-up).

36B vs 34C — Which Is Bigger?
Neither. They hold the same cup volume. 36B and 34C are sister sizes: the 34C sits on a two-inch smaller band and gains one cup letter to compensate, so cup capacity comes out equivalent. The only difference is how the band fits your ribcage.
This matters more at 36B than at most sizes, because 36B is the size people most often land in by measuring the band loosely. If you were sized at a shop that added inches to your underbust, or you measured on an inhale, a 34C is frequently the size that actually fits.

Is 36B Small?
It depends entirely on which half of the size you mean, which is why the question gets asked so often.
The B cup is modest — third of a dozen-plus cup letters running AA, A, B, C, D, DD, DDD and well past that. On its own, B reads small. The 36 band, by contrast, sits at the wider end of standard sizing; most mainstream ranges centre on 34, and 36 is a step above that. So a 36B is a modest cup on a comparatively broad frame.
What this means in practice is that the bust reads proportionally smaller than the same B cup would on a 32 or 30 band. It also means 36B has one of the most forgiving style ranges of any size — bralettes, wireless, triangle cuts, plunge, push-up and t-shirt bras all work, because there is not enough volume to demand structural support. At 36B there is not enough cup volume to compensate for a poor band, which cuts both ways: a well-fitting band makes almost any style work, and a loose one makes every style fail. Three Things That Undo a 36B
- A loose band — the dominant fault. It should sit level all the way round with just enough give for two fingers. If it rides up, sister-down to 34C.
- Cups that gape at the top — usually a shape mismatch rather than a size error. A moulded contour cup solves it more often than dropping to 36A does.
- Buying on the tightest hook — bands stretch. Buy so it fits on the loosest hook, and tighten as it wears in.
