How do you mix and match bikini sizes?
Buy the top and the bottom as separates, each in its own size. Size the top by your bust, ideally in your bra size if the top is bra-sized, and size the bottom by your hips and waist, as you would underwear. Then tie the two together with color: the same shade, the same collection, or a solid bottom that picks up one color from a printed top.
Very few people are the same size on top and on the bottom. A set sold in one size forces a compromise on one half, usually the top. Separates remove that compromise completely.
Mixing and matching also lets you choose different styles for each half, such as an underwire top with a high-waisted bottom, and replace one half when it wears out.
If you have ever bought a bikini set where the bottom fit and the top did not, or the other way round, you already know the problem. Bodies are not graded like swimsuit sets.
Here is how to size each half separately, how to choose bottoms that work with your top, how to make two separate pieces look like a set, and the mistakes to avoid.
Two halves, two sizes: top by bust, bottom by hips and waist.
Fuller busts get the best fit from bra-sized tops.
Choose the bottom's rise and coverage as carefully as its size.
Match by color or collection, or pair a print with a solid.
Separates last longer: replace the half that wears out first.
2measurements: bust and hips.
2sizes you can buy independently.
1color thread to tie them together.
Why Mix and Match Sizes
Most bodies are not the same size on top and bottom.
Swimsuit sets are graded on an average body: a medium top with a medium bottom. Real bodies vary far more than that. A fuller bust with slimmer hips, a smaller bust with curvier hips, or a long torso with a short rise all fall outside what a matched set expects. The result is a top that gapes or spills, or a bottom that digs in or slides down.
What Separates Solve
FitEach half fitsThe top is chosen for your bust and the bottom for your hips, so neither has to compromise.
SupportReal support on topSeparates let you choose a bra-sized or underwire top without changing the bottom.
StyleYour choice of shapesPair a supportive top with a cheeky bottom, or a triangle with a high-waisted brief.
ValueLonger lifeTops and bottoms rarely wear out at the same rate. Replace one half, not both.
This matters most if you are fuller in the bust, because alpha-sized sets rarely carry enough cup. Our guide to bra-sized swimwear explains why bra-sized tops are sold as separates by design.
How to Size the Top
Start with your bust, not your clothing size.
The top is sized by your bust and the bottom by your hips and waist, then the two are matched by color.
There are two ways bikini tops are sized. Alpha-sized tops come in XS to XL, with one cup volume for each size. They work well for small and average busts. Bra-sized tops come in band and cup sizes, like 34D or 36F, and fit fuller busts far better because the band and cup are chosen separately.
Top Sizing Tips
Bra sizeUse your bra size as a starting pointFor bra-sized tops, start with the size you wear in a well-fitting bra. If you are not sure of it, Brasize.ai can help you measure.
ChartsCheck the brand's chartSwim sizing does not always match bra sizing, so compare your measurements to each brand's chart.
AlphaFor S to XL topsGo by your bust measurement on the chart, and size up if you are between sizes and fuller in the bust.
How to Size the Bottom
Size by your hips and waist, then choose the rise and coverage.
Bikini bottoms are usually sized like underwear, in XS to XL or numeric sizes. Measure around the fullest part of your hips and, for high-waisted styles, around your natural waist, then compare to the brand's chart. If you know your underwear size in the same brand, that is a useful guide.
Bottom Sizing Tips
HipsGo by your hip measurementFor most bottoms, the hip measurement decides the size. For high-waisted bottoms, check the waist too.
BetweenIf you are between sizesChoose the larger size for full-coverage and high-waisted bottoms, and consider the smaller one for tie-side styles, which adjust.
RisePick a rise you likeLow, mid and high rise sit at very different points. The rise changes comfort and coverage more than the size does.
BackChoose your coverageFull, moderate, cheeky or thong coverage at the back is a style choice, not a size choice.
Do not size the bottom to match the top
If your top is a large because of your bust, your bottom does not need to be a large. Buying the bottom in the same size as the top is the most common mix-and-match mistake.
Pairing Top and Bottom Styles
Separates let you balance the shapes as well as the sizes.
A supportive top in one size, a high-waisted bottom in another, matched by color.
Mix and Match for Your Shape
A few common combinations, and what usually works.
By Body
Fuller bustFuller bust, slimmer hipsA bra-sized or underwire top in your full cup size, with a bottom one or more sizes smaller than you would choose in a set.
Curvier hipsSmaller bust, curvier hipsA light triangle or bandeau top in a small size, with a bottom sized for your hips. A high-waisted or mid-rise bottom adds comfort.
TorsoLong or short torsoSeparates avoid the torso length problem that one-pieces have. Choose the rise of the bottom to sit where it feels comfortable.
Plus sizePlus size, any shapeChoose a supportive top first, then a bottom with the rise and coverage you like. Our guide to plus size swimwear covers support for fuller figures.
How to Make Separates Look Like a Set
Color is the thread that ties two pieces together.
Four Ways to Match
CollectionStay in one collectionMany brands design tops and bottoms in the same prints and colors to be mixed and matched. This is the easiest way to get an exact match.
SolidSame solid colorBlack, navy and white are the easiest to match across pieces, though shades of black can vary slightly between brands.
PrintPrint plus a solidPair a printed top with a solid bottom in one of the print's colors, or the reverse. It looks deliberate and is easy to find.
ContrastContrast on purposeTwo clearly different colors, such as coral and navy, look intentional. Two colors that are almost the same look like a mistake.
If you are buying online, compare the two pieces under the same light when they arrive. Our black bikinis collection is the simplest starting point if you want a guaranteed match.
Two tops and three bottoms in coordinating colors give six different combinations.
Common Mix-and-Match Mistakes
Most problems come from treating separates like a set.
What to Avoid
SizeMatching the sizesThe top and bottom sizes do not need to match. Buy each for its own measurement.
RiseIgnoring the riseA bottom in the right size can still feel wrong if the rise is too low or too high for you.
ShadeNear-miss colorsTwo blacks or two navies from different brands may not match. Stay in one collection or contrast deliberately.
FabricMismatched finishesA shiny top with a matte bottom, or ribbed with smooth, can look odd. Match the fabric finish as well as the color.
SupportChoosing a top for looks onlyIf you are fuller in the bust, choose the top for support first and the bottom for style.

Mixing and matching bikini sizes means buying the top and the bottom separately, each in its own size: the top for your bust, ideally in your bra size, and the bottom for your hips and waist. Choose the rise and coverage of the bottom as carefully as its size.
Tie the two together with the same color, the same collection, or a print and a solid that share a shade. And when one half wears out first, replace just that piece.
Can you buy bikini tops and bottoms in different sizes?
Yes. Buying separates lets you choose a top for your bust and a bottom for your hips. Many brands design their tops and bottoms to be bought separately and mixed and matched. Shop bikini bottoms
How do I know what size bikini bottom to get?
Measure the fullest part of your hips, and your waist for high-waisted styles, then compare to the brand's chart. Your underwear size in the same brand is also a good guide.
Should my bikini top be the same size as my bra?
For bra-sized tops, your bra size is the best starting point, though you should still check the brand's chart. For S to XL tops, go by your bust measurement. Shop bra-sized swimwear
How do I make a mismatched bikini look like a set?
Choose pieces from the same collection, the same solid color, or a printed piece paired with a solid in one of the print's colors. Match the fabric finish too.
Is it better to buy a bikini set or separates?
Separates usually fit better, especially if your top and bottom sizes differ or you are fuller in the bust. A set is fine if both halves fit you in the same size.
What size bikini bottom if I am between sizes?
Go up for full-coverage and high-waisted bottoms, and consider sizing down in tie-side styles, which you can adjust.
Sizing varies between swimwear brands. Check each product's size chart before you buy, and compare colors in the product photos.
