A 38DD is a DD cup on a 38-inch band. It fits an underbust of about 37 to 38 inches (94 to 97 cm) and a bust of about 43 inches (109 cm). The DD means the bust is about 5 inches larger than the underbust.
The sister sizes of 38DD are 36DDD and 40D. They hold the same cup volume, so a 36DDD (36E in UK sizing) is the fix when a 38DD band rides up, and a 40D is the fix when it digs in.

What "38DD" Actually Means
Two measurements read together.
The number is the band. The 38 tells you the band is made for a ribcage of about 38 inches, measured snugly just under the bust. At a DD cup, the band does most of the lifting. A firm band holds the breasts up and forward; the straps should only steady the cups.
The letters are the cup, and they describe a difference. Each cup step is about one inch of difference between your bust and your underbust: A is 1 inch, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4 and DD is 5. DD is a single cup size, one step above D, not two D cups. It only means the bust is 5 inches larger than the band.

Read a bra size as "band, then the difference." A 38DD is a 38-inch band with a 5-inch difference. Change the band and the cup letter has to change in the opposite direction to keep the same volume.

Why the underbust can read 37. Most US brands make bands in even numbers only, so a snug underbust of 37 inches rounds up to a 38 band. A 37-inch underbust and a 43-inch bust is still a 38DD, because the cup is worked out from the 38. If your underbust is 36 inches or less, a 36 band will likely fit better, and the same cup volume is a 36DDD.
Measure without padding and on a normal breath. Wear a thin, unpadded bra or none, keep the tape level all the way around, and measure your bust standing straight. At larger cups, it helps to take a second bust measurement leaning forward at 90 degrees; if it is more than an inch larger than the standing number, round your cup up. In centimeters, a 38 band is an 85 band in European sizing, which uses the underbust in centimeters rounded to the nearest 5. European cup steps are about 2 cm rather than one inch, and Europe has no DD step, so the US DD becomes an E on a European label: a 38DD is an EU 85E.
How to Confirm You Are a 38DD
A tape gets you close; a fit test confirms it.
Scoop and settle. After you fasten the bra, lean forward and use the opposite hand to scoop each breast into its cup from the side. Is 38DD the Same as 38E?
It depends on whose label it is.
In US sizing, DD and E are usually the same cup, and many US brands print it as DD/E. In UK sizing, E is the cup after DD, so a UK 38E is one cup larger than a 38DD and equals a US 38DDD. In EU sizing, there is no DD step, so a US 38DD is an EU 85E.

Is 38DD an XL or 1X?
For bras sold in letter sizes.
Sports bras, wireless bras, bralettes and shapewear are often sold in letter sizes. A 38DD is usually an XL, and in brands with plus size letter ranges it can fall into a 1X. Because a 38DD has a lot of cup volume for its band, a letter-sized bra that fits your ribcage may still be too small in the cup.
Check the brand chart for both band and cup. If a 38DD sits between two letter sizes, the larger one usually gives the cups enough room, and you can tighten the band with hooks or adjustable straps. For running and high impact sport, choose a bra sized by band and cup rather than by letter.
What Do 38DD Breasts Look Like?

A 38DD spreads a 5-inch difference across a broad ribcage, so 38DD breasts usually look full at the front and at the sides. In clothes, a 38DD reads as a full bust. The wider band also means the breast roots are wider, which is why side support and wide underwires matter more at 38DD than at smaller bands.
Shape matters as much as size. Round, teardrop, wide-set, close-set, shallow and projected breasts all occur at 38DD, and each changes how the size looks and which bras fit. What matters for fit is where that weight goes. A firm band carries most of it around your ribcage. When the band is too loose, the weight moves to the straps, and that is the usual cause of shoulder grooves and upper back ache at this size. Start with the band. If the band rides up or the straps dig in, the band is too loose. Many 38DD wearers fit better in 36DDD once the band is snug. Then the cup. If the band is right but the cup overflows or the gore lifts, go up a cup. Small habits that make a full bust more comfortable.
Rotate your bras. Wearing the same bra two days running stretches the band faster. With three everyday bras, each one gets a day to recover. Adjust straps as the band stretches. Straps should be firm but never doing the lifting; loosen them a little as you move to tighter hooks.
Use sister sizes when traveling between brands. If one brand runs tight in the band, its 40D may fit like another brand's 38DD. Recheck after changes.
