This is the most-asked question about the size, so it goes first. A sister size holds the same cup volume on a different band. Move down one band and up one cup, or up one band and down one cup. For a 38D, that gives you:

The extended chain — and where it stops being useful

You will often see 38D listed as equivalent to 36DD, 34DDD and 32F all at once. The volume maths does chain that way: each step down a band and up a cup holds roughly the same cup capacity. But the further you travel, the less useful the answer becomes, because a 32-inch band and a 38-inch band do not fit the same ribcage — and the band is what carries the weight.

Two numbers define the size. Treat them as starting points — cup depth and wire width vary between brands — but they are what the label is built on.

What "38D" Actually Means

A bra size is two measurements read together. The band — the 38 — is the circumference of your ribcage directly under the bust, rounded to the nearest even inch. The cup — the D — is not a volume in its own right; it is the difference between your bust at its fullest and that band. Four inches of difference is a D cup.

Because the cup letter is relative to the band, the same letter holds more volume on a wider frame. A 38D holds noticeably more than a 34D — around 730 mL per breast against 600 — even though both are "D" cups. The letter has not changed; the frame it sits on has. That is also why a 38D and a 36D are not the same size despite sharing a letter.

What Is the Next Bra Size After 38D?

It depends which direction you need, and the two answers are commonly confused.

If the cup is too small — you're spilling at the top, or the centre gore won't sit flat against your sternum — the next size up is 38DD. Same band, one cup letter larger, a 5-inch differential instead of 4. That is a genuine increase in cup volume.

If the band is the problem — riding up at the back, or digging in — you don't want a bigger cup at all. You want a sister size: 36DD for a snugger band, 40C for a roomier one. Both hold the same cup you already have.

Some of these are genuine cup differences; some are band differences. The distinction is what matters.

The rule underneath all of it: comparisons on the same band are genuine cup-size differences. Comparisons across bands are usually sister sizes. D is the last cup letter US and UK sizing write identically. Above DD the ladders split — the US continues DDD and DDDD while the UK moves to E, F, FF — but at D there is no translation needed. Only the band number changes abroad.

European, German and Japanese sizing all use the same 85 band for a 38-inch underbust — they measure in centimetres and round to the nearest 5. What Does a 38D Look Like?

There is no single answer, and the reason is structural. A cup letter describes a ratio between bust and band rather than an absolute volume, so a D on a 30 band and a D on a 44 band are proportionally comparable but hold quite different amounts of tissue. The spectrum below shows the range.

Breast shape varies independently of size too. Round, teardrop, projected, shallow, wide-set and close-set shapes all occur at 38D, and shape drives both appearance and which cuts fit far more than the letter does. 38D sits in a genuinely comfortable spot commercially: 38 is the last band most mainstream ranges carry, and D is well within their cup range — so almost everything is available to you. Fit rests mainly on band construction, since the cup is moderate and the band is long.
