What is a 38DDD bra size?
A 38DDD is a DDD cup on a 38-inch band, and it is the same size as a 38E. The 38 is your underbust. The DDD cup is a 6-inch difference between bust and band, so a 38DDD means roughly a 38-inch underbust and a 44-inch bust (97 cm and 112 cm). DDD is the US label; UK brands write the identical cup as E, and EU brands write it as 85F. Sister sizes are 36F (UK, written 36G in US sizing) and 40DD. A 38DDD holds roughly 965 mL per breast, about 2.1 lb.
38DDD is one of the most searched bra sizes in the US, and one of the most misread. The same cup is sold as 38DDD by US brands, 38E by UK brands and 85F by European ones. Shoppers regularly skip a brand because it "stops at DD," when its entire E range would fit. Others order a 38F expecting a DDD and get a cup a full size larger, because a UK F is not the same thing as an EU F.
This guide settles the labels first, then covers everything that follows from them: what a 38DDD measures in inches and centimeters, the sister sizes at 36F and 40DD, how 38DDD compares with 38DD, 38G, 36DDD and 40DDD, what 38DDD breasts look like and weigh, the bra styles that hold at this cup, and the fit problems that come up most, each with a fix. The calculator further down returns your size in six countries at once.

- Measurements: underbust about 38 in / 97 cm; bust about 44 in / 112 cm.
- Abroad: UK 38E · EU 85F · FR 100F · AU 16E · JP 85F.
- Sister sizes: 36F (snugger band; 36G in US labels) and 40DD (looser band).
- Volume about 965 mL per breast; weight about 2.1 lb (0.95 kg) per breast.
- A UK 38F is one cup larger than a 38DDD. An EU 85F is the same cup.
- At this band and cup, the band carries the weight. Side support, firm bands and wider straps matter.
38DDD and 38E Are the Same Size
This is the most useful fact about the size, and it costs shoppers money when they miss it. The US and UK cup ladders agree up to DD and then split. The US repeats the letter once more to make DDD, then jumps to G. The UK moves through the alphabet: E, F, FF, G. Both ladders are built on the same measurement, the difference between bust and band in inches. At a 6-inch difference, US brands write DDD and UK brands write E.
| Differential | US | UK | EU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 inches | D | D | D |
| 5 inches | DD | DD | E |
| 6 inches | DDD | E | F |
| 7 inches | G | F | G |
| 8 inches | H | FF | H |
Open the brand's size chart and look at what follows DD. If the next size is DDD, the brand uses US labels and 38DDD is your size. If the next size is E, it uses UK labels and 38E is your size. A brand that seems not to stock your size often does, under the other letter. Browse the 38E range alongside the 38DDD range and you are looking at the same cup.
The EU column adds a third label. European sizing has no DD step, so every letter from D upward shifts by one, and a 6-inch difference becomes F. That is why "38DDD is a 38F" is only half true. On a European label the size is 85F, and 85F fits like your 38DDD. On a UK label, 38F means a 7-inch difference, one full cup larger. If a brand writes the band as 38 and the cup as F, it is using UK sizing, and you want its 38E instead. A minority of charts label DD as E, and some US brands use a DDDD step. Where a brand's own chart differs, the brand's chart wins.
Because DDD and E are interchangeable, our E cup guide covers the same cup from the UK side and the DDD bra and breast size guide covers every DDD band from 30 to 40. For why the two systems part ways above DD, see UK vs US bra sizes.
38DDD Measurements in Inches and Centimeters
Two numbers define the size. Treat them as starting points, since cup depth, wire width and projection vary between brands, but they are what the label is built on.
| Measurement | Inches | Centimeters | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underbust | 38″ | 97 cm | Ribcage directly under the bust, snug and level |
| Bust | 44″ | 112 cm | Fullest point, tape parallel to the floor |
| Difference | 6″ | 15 cm | DDD in US labels, E in UK, F in EU |
Take the underbust snug, at the end of a normal breath out. A band measured on a full inhale reads one to two inches large, and an inflated band pushes the cup letter down. That single error is why many people who buy 40DD are really 38DDD, and why the band never feels settled.
Band measurements between about 37 and 39 inches round to a 38 band. If yours sits right on the line, try both the 38 and the sister sizes below; the band that stays level all day is the right one. Our how to measure your bra size guide walks through each step, or use the bra size calculator for a full fitting with band and shape checks.
Three Checks That Confirm You Are a 38DDD
Measurements get you close. The fit of a bra you already own confirms it. Put on your best-fitting current bra, fastened on the loosest hook, and run these three checks in front of a mirror.
1. The band test. Raise both arms overhead. If the band stays level and does not slide up your back, the band is right. If it rides up, your band is too loose and your real size is likely a 38 band or smaller with a larger cup letter. Many people in a 40DD are 38DDD once they correct the band, because a smaller band needs a larger letter to hold the same volume.
2. The scoop test. Lean forward, reach into each cup and lift the breast tissue from the side toward the center. Stand up. If tissue now spills over the top edge or the cup cuts a line across the breast, the cup is too small. One cup up from 38DD on the same band is 38DDD.
3. The gore test. The center panel between the cups should sit flat against the sternum. If it floats away from the body, the cups are too small or the wires too narrow for your root, the line where breast tissue meets the chest. Size up the cup before trying a different wire shape.
If all three pass in a 38DDD or 38E, that is your size. If the band passes but the cup fails, move one cup up to 38G or down to 38DD. If the cup passes but the band fails, use the sister sizes in the next section.
38DDD Sister Sizes: 36F and 40DD
Bras come in fixed sizes; bodies don't. Sister sizing gives you options that hold the same cup volume on a different band: down one band and up one cup, or up one band and down one cup. For a 38DDD, that is 36F and 40DD.
Watch the label on the sister-down. Stepping down from 38DDD lands on 36F in UK notation. US brands write that same size as 36G, because the US ladder goes DDD then G. So if you shop a US brand, look for 36G; on a UK brand, look for 36F. The sister-up, 40DD, is written the same way in both systems.
Band First
Band rides up at the back? It is too loose. Go to 36F (UK) or 36G (US) for the same cup on a snugger band. At a 38DDD the band is carrying close to 2.1 lb per side, and a slack band hands that load to your shoulders.
Band digs in or restricts breathing? Go to 40DD for the same cup on a roomier band. Try the tightest hook of the 38 first, since new bands relax with wear. The sister sizes guide covers the full framework.

Same Cup Volume, Different Band
If the band is the problem, the sister size fixes it without changing the cup.

Most comparisons at this size come down to one variable once the labels are settled. Same band means the cup changes; same cup means the band changes.

Three rows in that table are the same cup under a different name, which is exactly why the size generates so much confusion. The other point worth holding onto: a DDD on a 36 band and a DDD on a 40 band share a letter, not a volume. The letter describes a ratio. For the cup below, see the DD cup guide; for the cup above in UK labels, the F cup guide. For the band below, our 36DDD bra size guide covers the same cup on a 36.
38DDD in US, UK, EU and International Sizing
The 6-inch difference stays constant across countries. The band number and the cup letter both change, which is why a conversion table is necessary at this size rather than a nicety.
| System | Band | Cup | Full size |
|---|---|---|---|
| US | 38 | DDD | 38DDD |
| UK | 38 | E | 38E |
| Europe (EU / DE) | 85 | F | 85F |
| France / Spain | 100 | F | 100F |
| Australia / NZ | 16 | E | 16E |
| Japan | 85 | F | 85F |
| Italy | 5 | F | 5F |
Three letters, DDD, E and F, all describe one cup. For every size across all systems, see the bra size conversion chart.

What Do 38DDD Breasts Look Like?
There is no single answer, and the reason is structural. A cup letter describes the ratio between bust and band, not a fixed volume. A DDD on a 30 band and a DDD on a 40 band are proportionally similar but hold very different amounts of tissue. At a 38 band, a DDD cup is full and wide as well as projected. The volume spreads across a broader chest, so a 38DDD tends to look full through the sides rather than only at the front, and side support becomes as important as lift. The spectrum below shows how the same letter changes across bands.
Shape varies independently of size. Round, teardrop, projected, shallow, wide-set and close-set shapes all occur at 38DDD, and shape drives both how the size looks and which cuts fit far more than the letter does. Two people who both wear 38DDD can look quite different in the same top and both be correctly sized. Our breast shapes guide covers each type and the bra styles that suit it.

How Much Do 38DDD Breasts Weigh?
A 38DDD cup holds roughly 965 mL per breast, which works out to about 2.1 lb (0.95 kg) per side and about 4.2 lb for the pair. These are estimates based on cup volume and average tissue density; real figures vary with composition and shape. What matters for fit is where that weight goes. A well-fitted band carries most of it around the ribcage. When the band is loose, the load shifts to the straps and the shoulders, and that is the most common cause of shoulder grooves and upper-back ache at this size.
Best Bras for a 38DDD
38DDD is well past the point where construction stops being cosmetic. At close to 2.1 lb per breast, the cup needs real architecture: properly set wires, seamed or side-support cups, a firm band with at least three hooks, and straps wide enough not to dig. Brands that scale a 34C pattern upward rather than designing for a fuller bust tend to fit worse here, usually with narrow wires and shallow cups.
| Style | Works at 38DDD? | What to look for | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full coverage | Excellent | The workhorse. The cup wraps further around the breast and the band and wires do the structural work. | Shop Full coverage |
| Balconette | Excellent | Horizontal neckline for lift. Look for three-piece seamed cups and wider-set straps. | Shop Balconette |
| T-shirt | Good | Smooth line under knits. Check the cup is genuinely shaped for depth, not just foam-lined. | Shop T-shirt |
| Minimizer | Good | Redistributes projection for a cleaner line under button-front shirts and tailoring. | Shop Minimizer |
| Plunge | Good | Works for V-necks if the center gore still sits flat against the sternum at this depth. | Shop Plunge |
| Longline | Good | Extra band depth spreads the load and smooths the ribcage under fitted clothes. | Shop Longline |
| Sports (encapsulation) | Good | Separate molded cups outperform compression-only styles from DD upward. | Shop Sports |
| Strapless | Workable | Needs silicone grip and boned wings. Many 38DDD wearers go to 36F for more band grip. | Shop Strapless |
| Wireless | Check first | Only if graded for DDD or E with internal slings or side panels. | Shop Wireless |
Search Both Letters
The practical payoff of knowing DDD equals E is that it doubles your options. When a brand's range appears to stop at DD, check whether it continues into E. When filtering a retailer, search both 38DDD and 38E. Start with full coverage, balconette and t-shirt bras, or go straight to the 38DDD range. If your frame sits between band sizes, the wider plus size bra edit covers styles built with firmer bands and taller wings.
38DDD in the Styles That Hold
Full coverage and balconette are the two most reliable starting points at this band and cup.

A loose band. This is the dominant fault. The band should sit level all the way around, with room for two fingers and no more. If it rides up at the back, move to 36F (36G in US labels). Shop 36F.
Straps doing the work. If you tighten the straps to get lift, the band has already failed. Straps should carry roughly a fifth of the load. Wider, padded straps help with comfort, but they do not fix a loose band. Shop full coverage.
Assuming a brand does not stock your size. Check for 38E before moving on. It is the same cup, and many of the best full-bust brands label in UK sizing. Shop 38E.
Common 38DDD Fit Problems
Most 38DDD fit problems trace back to the band or to the label. Read the symptom, then the likely cause, then the fix.
| Symptom | What it means | What to try | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band rides up the back | Band too loose, the most common fault at this cup | Tighten a hook, or go to 36F (36G US) | Shop 36F |
| Straps dig into shoulders | Band too loose, so straps carry the weight | Fix the band first; loosen straps afterward | Shop 36G |
| Spills over the top of the cup | Cup too small | Up one cup, same band: 38G (US) or 38F (UK) | Shop 38G |
| Cup gapes or wrinkles | Cup too large, or shape mismatch | Try 38DD, or switch to a seamed three-piece cup | Shop 38DD |
| Center gore lifts off the sternum | Cup too small, or wires too narrow | Size the cup up first; then try a wider-wire style | Shop full coverage |
| "Brand doesn't carry my size" | Brand uses UK labels | Look for 38E, the identical cup | Shop 38E |
| Ordered a 38F and it is too big | UK F is a 7-inch difference | Order the brand's 38E instead | Shop 38E |
| Band digs in or leaves deep marks | Band too tight, or on the tightest hook too soon | Start on the loosest hook, or go to 40DD | Shop 40DD |
"At 38DDD most shoppers are working with half the market. They see DD, then DDD, and assume E is something else entirely, so a whole category of well-made full-bust bras never gets considered. Learn that DDD and E are one size and your options roughly double."
