What bra should you wear with each neckline?
Match the bra to the shape of the neckline and where the straps fall. Crew and scoop necks: a smooth T-shirt bra. V-necks: a plunge whose center sits below the V. Square and sweetheart necks: a balconette with wide-set straps. Off-the-shoulder and strapless tops: a strapless or longline strapless. Halters: a convertible bra worn halter style. Cut-in armholes and racerback tops: a racerback bra.
Three things decide whether a bra shows: how low the center goes, where the straps sit and how high the band reaches at the back and sides. Get those right for the neckline and the bra disappears.
For very deep or open necklines where no bra can hide, use an adhesive bra or tape.
A bra that is perfect under a T-shirt can ruin a V-neck, and the one that works under a square neck shows at the shoulder in an off-the-shoulder top. The neckline decides which bra disappears.
Here is the bra for every common neckline, the three measurements that decide whether it shows, and what to do for the necklines no bra can handle.
- Crew and scoop necks: a smooth T-shirt bra in your skin tone.
- V-necks: a plunge with a center lower than the V.
- Square and sweetheart: a balconette with wide-set straps.
- Off-the-shoulder and strapless: a strapless, or a longline strapless for fuller busts.
- Halter: a convertible bra worn halter style.
- Cut-in armholes: a racerback, so the straps sit inside the opening.
The Three Rules That Decide Whether a Bra Shows
Before style names, look at these three things on the bra and on the top.
Most neckline problems come from one of these. A bra peeking out at the center of a V-neck has a center that is too tall. A strap showing in a square neck sits too close to the neck. A band showing in a low-back dress needs a low-back or backless style. Once you know which one is wrong, the fix is simple.
Under thin, pale fabric, match the bra to your skin tone rather than the top. A white bra under a white shirt shows more than a nude one. Our T-shirt bra guide has a color-matching chart by skin tone.
The Neckline Chart
Every common neckline and the bra to wear with it.
The styles to avoid are mostly the opposites: textured lace under thin knits, a tall center under any V, straps set close to the neck under a square neckline, and a standard band under a low back. Clear straps belong on the avoid list for almost everything.
| Neckline | Best bra | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Crew and T-shirt | T-shirt bra | Smooth, seam-free cups |
| Scoop | T-shirt or demi | Cups sit below the scoop |
| V-neck | Plunge | Low center hides in the V |
| Deep V | Deep plunge or adhesive | Center sits very low |
| Square | Balconette | Straight top, wide straps |
| Sweetheart | Balconette or demi | Follows the curve |
| Off-the-shoulder | Strapless | Nothing at the shoulder |
| One-shoulder | Convertible or strapless | Strap follows the top |
| Halter | Convertible, halter style | Straps sit inside the halter |
| High neck | Racerback or T-shirt | Straps sit inward |
| Cut-in armholes | Racerback | Straps sit inside the opening |
| Low back | Low-back or backless | Band sits below the opening |
Everyday Necklines: Crew, Scoop and Boat
For most tops you wear every day, a smooth T-shirt bra does the work.
Crew necks and T-shirts cover the bra completely, so the only question is what shows through. A T-shirt bra with smooth molded or seamless cups gives no lines or texture under thin knits. Scoop necks go lower, so check the top edge of the cup: a demi or a lower-cut T-shirt bra sits below the scoop, where a tall full cup may peek out. Browse demi bras.
Boat necks, also called bateau necklines, run wide across the collarbones and can show straps at the outer shoulder. A bra with straps set closer to the neck, or a racerback, keeps them hidden. Cowl necks drape low when you lean forward, so treat them like a V-neck and choose a lower center.
Low Necklines: V-Neck, Deep V and Sweetheart
Low necklines are about the center of the bra. It has to sit lower than the neckline.
V-necks need a plunge bra, where the cups angle in and the center drops low. Measure the depth of the V on yourself and compare it with the center of the bra; if the bra center is higher, it will show. Our plunge bra guide explains the three depths. For a deep V that runs to the ribs, even a deep plunge can show. An adhesive bra or boob tape is the reliable answer there.
Sweetheart necklines curve over each breast and dip in the middle. A balconette or demi with a low center follows the curve. If you also want cleavage at a V or sweetheart, our guide to the best bras for cleavage covers the plunge push-up options.

Shoulder Necklines: Square, Off-the-Shoulder, One-Shoulder and Halter
These are about the straps: where they sit, or whether you need them at all.
Square necklines cut straight across and sit wide on the shoulder. A balconette has a straight top edge and straps set wide toward the shoulder, which keeps them under the fabric. Bras with straps set close to the neck will show at the inner corners.
Off-the-shoulder and Bardot tops leave the shoulders bare, so you need a strapless bra. For a fuller bust, a strapless with a deep band and side boning, or a longline strapless, holds much better than a short band; browse plus size strapless bras. Our strapless bra guide covers how to choose one that stays up.
One-shoulder tops need either a strapless or a convertible bra with a single strap worn on the covered side. Halters need a convertible bra worn halter style, with both straps around the neck, or a dedicated halter bra. Our convertible bra guide covers the strap positions and the support limits, and for halter dresses see our halter dress guide.

Backs and Armholes: Cut-In, Racerback and Low Back
Some tops show the bra from the side or the back, not the front.
Cut-in armholes, as on many tanks and high-neck tops, leave the outer shoulder bare, so standard straps show. A racerback bra brings the straps in toward the neck so they sit inside the opening. Many convertible bras can be worn racerback too.
Low backs show the band. A low-back bra drops the band below the opening; for a fully open back, an adhesive bra is the only option. Our guide to low-back bras covers how low each style goes, and our backless dress guide covers the dresses. For wedding gowns, see our guide to bras for a wedding dress by neckline and back.
Clear plastic straps catch the light, dig in and do not hide as well as people hope. A strapless, convertible or racerback bra is almost always the better answer.

The Core Kit: Five Bras for Every Neckline
You do not need a different bra for every top. These five cover almost everything.
| Bra | Covers |
|---|---|
| Skin-tone T-shirt bra | Crew, scoop, boat, sheer and white tops |
| Plunge | V-necks, cowls, wrap tops |
| Convertible balconette | Square, sweetheart, halter, one-shoulder, racerback |
| Strapless or longline strapless | Off-the-shoulder, tube and strapless |
| Adhesive bra | Deep V, open back, backless |
Start with the T-shirt bra and the plunge, which cover most everyday clothes, and add the others as your wardrobe needs them. Our guide to how many bras you need covers rotation and replacement, and our guide to hiding your bra under summer outfits has more ideas for warm-weather tops.
What This Means for You
Match the bra to the neckline by checking three things: the center has to sit below the neckline, the straps have to sit where the top covers you, and the band has to stay below any opening at the back or sides. A T-shirt bra, a plunge, a convertible balconette, a strapless and an adhesive bra between them cover almost every top you own.
Under sheer or white tops, match your skin tone, and for the necklines no bra can hide, reach for adhesive options rather than clear straps.
