What is a 38C bra size?
A 38C is a C cup on a 38-inch band. It fits an underbust of about 37 to 38 inches (94 to 97 cm) and a bust of about 41 inches (104 cm). The C means the bust is about 3 inches larger than the underbust.
The sister sizes of 38C are 36D and 40B. All three hold the same cup volume, roughly 660 mL per breast, so a 36D is the fix when a 38C band rides up and a 40B is the fix when it digs in.
In other countries a 38C is 38C in the UK, 85C in Europe, 100C in France and 16C in Australia.
38C is a popular bra size, and one of the most misunderstood. People expect a C cup to be small, then find that a 38C looks and feels fuller than they thought. Others wear a 38C with a band that rides up all day, when a 36D would fit far better.
This guide covers what a 38C measures, how to check that it is really your size, sister sizes, how 38C compares with nearby sizes, international conversions, what 38C breasts look like and weigh, the bra styles that work best, and the fit problems that come up most, each with a fix.
- Band: 38, for an underbust of about 37 to 38 inches (94 to 97 cm).
- Bust: about 41 inches (104 cm), a 3-inch difference.
- Sister sizes: 36D (snugger band) and 40B (looser band).
- Volume: roughly 660 mL and 1.4 lb per breast, an estimate.
- Abroad: UK 38C, EU 85C, France 100C, Australia 16C.
- Letter size: usually a large, sometimes an XL.
What "38C" Actually Means
A bra size is two measurements read together.
The number is the band. The 38 tells you the band is made to fit a ribcage of about 38 inches, measured snugly just under the bust. The band does most of the work in a bra. It should carry most of the support, with the straps only steadying the cups.
The letter is the cup, and it is a difference, not a size. Each cup letter stands for one inch of difference between your bust and your underbust: A is 1 inch, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4 and DD is 5. A C cup on its own tells you nothing about volume. It only means the bust is 3 inches larger than the band.
That is why a 38C and a 32C are very different sizes even though both are C cups. The 38C spreads that 3-inch difference across a wider ribcage, so it holds much more breast tissue. A 38C holds the same volume as a 36D or a 34DD. Our C cup guide shows how the same letter changes across every band, and our guide to bra cup sizes covers every letter from AA to K.
Read a bra size as "band, then the difference." A 38C is a 38-inch band with a 3-inch difference. Change the band and the cup letter has to change too, or the volume changes.
38C Measurements in Inches and Centimeters
Two measurements and one subtraction.
| Measurement | Inches | Centimeters |
|---|---|---|
| Underbust (band) | 37 to 38 | 94 to 97 |
| Bust (fullest point) | About 41 | About 104 |
| Difference | 3 | About 7.5 |
| Band size | 38 | EU 85 |
Why the underbust can read 37. Most US brands make bands in even numbers only. If your snug underbust measures 37 inches, you round up to a 38 band, and your cup is worked out from the 38. So a 37-inch underbust and a 41-inch bust is still a 38C. If your underbust is 36 inches or less, a 36 band is likely to fit better, and the same cup volume is a 36D.
Older methods add inches to the band. Some older charts tell you to add 4 or 5 inches to your underbust. That method puts many people into a band that is too big and a cup that is too small, and it is the most common reason a 36D wearer ends up in a 38C or a 40B. Measure your underbust as it is, snug, and use that number. Our step-by-step guide to measuring your bra size explains each measurement in detail.
In centimeters, a 38 band is an 85 band in European sizing. EU sizing uses the underbust in centimeters, rounded to the nearest 5, so an underbust of roughly 83 to 87 cm is an 85 band. The cup steps are about 2 cm each in EU sizing rather than 2.5 cm (one inch), which is why the letters drift apart at larger cups. At a C cup, US, UK and EU letters still match.
How to Confirm You Are a 38C
A tape measure gets you close; a fit test confirms it.

Fasten on the loosest hook when the bra is new. Bands stretch with wear and washing, and the tighter hooks let you take up that stretch over the bra's life. If the loosest hook already feels tight, you may need a 40B; if the tightest hook feels loose on a new bra, you likely need a 36D.
Bra sizes also vary between brands and styles, so treat 38C as your starting point rather than a fixed rule. A plunge may fit differently from a full coverage bra in the same size. If you want a quick starting size before you shop, Brasize.ai can help you work one out from your measurements.
Measuring the underbust over a padded bra, on a full breath in, or with the tape sloping down your back. Each one adds an inch or two and can push you into a 38 band when you are really a 36.
38C Sister Sizes: 36D and 40B
Same cup, different band.
Bras come in fixed sizes, but bodies do not. Sister sizing gives you options that hold the same cup volume on a different band: go down one band and up one cup letter, or up one band and down one cup letter. For a 38C, that is 36D and 40B.
| Sister size | Band | When to try it |
|---|---|---|
| 36D | 2 inches snugger | Your 38C band rides up, or you are already on the tightest hook |
| 40B | 2 inches looser | Your 38C band digs in or feels tight even on the loosest hook |
| 34DD | 4 inches snugger | Rarely; only if your underbust is close to 34 inches |
| 42A | 4 inches looser | Rarely; only if your underbust is close to 41 or 42 inches |
Use sister sizes to fix the band, not the cup. If the cup is the problem, change the cup letter on the same band: 38D if you spill, 38B if the cup gapes. Sister sizes also help when your exact size is out of stock in a style you like, or when a brand runs tight or loose in the band.
One more thing to know: check the 36D first. Many people wearing a 38C are better fitted in a 36D once they measure the band snugly. If your 38C band slides up your back by the end of the day, try a 36D before anything else. Our guides to sister sizes and the 36D bra size explain the switch in detail.
38C vs 36D, 38D, 36C and Other Nearby Sizes
Some are the same cup with a different band; some are a genuine size change.
| Comparison | Cup volume | In short |
|---|---|---|
| 38C vs 36D | Same | Sister sizes; 36D has the snugger band |
| 38C vs 40B | Same | Sister sizes; 40B has the looser band |
| 38C vs 38D | 38D is larger | One cup up on the same band |
| 38C vs 38B | 38B is smaller | One cup down on the same band |
| 38C vs 36C | 36C is smaller | Same letter, smaller band, less volume |
| 38C vs 40C | 40C is larger | Same letter, larger band, more volume |
| 38C vs 38DD | 38DD is larger | Two cups up on the same band |
38C vs 36D. These hold the same cup volume. The 36D band is about 2 inches tighter, so it gives more support from the band and less from the straps. If you can fasten a 36D comfortably on the loosest hook, it is often the better fit.
38C vs 38D. Same band, one cup larger. A 38D is a 4-inch difference instead of 3, about an inch fuller in the cup. Go up to 38D if your 38C cups spill at the top or press into the sides of your breast. Our 38D bra size guide covers that size.
38C vs 36C. These share a letter but not a volume. A 36C has a smaller band and holds less, roughly 600 mL per breast against 660 for a 38C. They are not sister sizes and are not interchangeable. See our 36C bra size guide and 34C bra size guide for the smaller bands.
38C vs 40C. Again the same letter, but the 40C holds more, roughly 730 mL per breast. If a 38C feels too small in both the band and the cup, 40C is the next size to try. The broader point: any time you change the band, the cup letter has to move in the opposite direction to keep the same volume.
38C in UK, EU and International Sizing
At a C cup, conversions are simple.
| System | 38C is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US | 38C | Band in inches |
| UK | 38C | Same letters as US up to D |
| EU and Germany | 85C | Band in centimeters |
| France, Spain, Belgium | 100C | EU band plus 15 |
| Australia and New Zealand | 16C | Dress size style band |
| Italy | 4C | Band numbered 1 upward |
US and UK sizing write C cups the same way, so a UK 38C fits like a US 38C. The two systems only start to differ above D: the US uses DD, DDD and G, while the UK uses DD, E, F and FF. If you shop UK brands, our guide to UK vs US bra sizes explains where the letters split.
Where a brand publishes its own size chart, follow it. A few European brands cut their bands slightly smaller or larger, and some list sizes like 85C/D for soft cup and wireless bras that cover two cup sizes. For those, the 85C/D or "38C/D" size is the one to choose.
Is 38C Medium, Large or XL?
For bras sold in S, M, L and XL.
Wireless bras, bralettes, sports bras and shapewear are often sold in letter sizes rather than band and cup. A 38C is usually a large, and in some brands an XL. Most letter charts group sizes in pairs, such as 36C, 36D, 38B and 38C for a large, so the letter depends on how each brand draws its lines.
| Letter size | Common bra sizes | Fits a 38C? |
|---|---|---|
| M | 34C, 34D, 36B, 36C | Usually too small |
| L | 36C, 36D, 38B, 38C | Usually yes |
| XL | 38C, 38D, 40B, 40C | In some brands |
| 1X | 40C, 40D, 42B, 42C | Usually too big |
These groupings are typical, not universal. Always check the brand chart, and when a 38C sits on the line between L and XL, choose by your priority: the smaller size for more support, the larger for more comfort. Letter-sized bras rely more on stretch than structured bras do, so they are more forgiving across nearby sizes.
What Do 38C Breasts Look Like?
Fuller than most people expect from a C cup.
Because a 38C spreads a 3-inch difference across a broad ribcage, 38C breasts tend to look full but balanced with the frame. They hold as much volume as a 36D, so in clothes a 38C usually reads as a medium to full bust rather than a small one. The wider band also means the breast tissue is spread a little wider across the chest than on a smaller band.
Two people who both wear a 38C can look quite different. Shape matters more than size: round, teardrop, wide-set, close-set, shallow and projected breasts all occur at 38C, and each changes how the size looks and which bras fit best. Shallow breasts often prefer balconette and demi cups; projected breasts often prefer seamed or full coverage cups. Our guide to breast shapes covers each type and the styles that suit it.
Is 38C a big size? It depends on what you compare it with. Next to a 34C it is clearly larger. Next to the D, DD and DDD cups that many people now wear on a 38 band, it is moderate. Our article on the average bra size puts 38C in context.
How Much Do 38C Breasts Weigh?
An estimate, and why it matters for fit.
A 38C cup holds roughly 660 mL per breast, which works out to about 1.4 lb (0.6 kg) per breast and about 2.8 lb for the pair. These figures are estimates based on cup volume and average tissue density; real weight varies with the mix of fatty and glandular tissue, and every body is different.
| Size | Approx. volume per breast | Approx. weight per breast |
|---|---|---|
| 36C | 600 mL | 1.3 lb |
| 38C (and 36D, 40B) | 660 mL | 1.4 lb |
| 40C (and 38D) | 730 mL | 1.6 lb |
What matters for fit is where that weight goes. A band that fits carries most of it around your ribcage. When the band is too loose, the weight shifts to the straps, and that is the usual cause of shoulder grooves, slipping straps and upper back ache. That is another reason to check whether a 36D band suits you better than a 38C.
Best Bra Styles for a 38C
Most styles work; these are the ones worth knowing.

Underwire or wireless? At a C cup both work well, and the choice comes down to comfort. Underwire gives more lift and separation; wireless styles with a wide band and side panels give enough support for everyday wear and feel softer. Our comparison of wireless vs underwire bras and our guide to wireless bras that support you go into more detail.
Padded or unpadded? Light padding or a contour cup gives a smooth shape under thin tops and keeps your shape consistent. Unlined cups feel lighter and often fit projected breasts better. Our guide to padded vs unpadded bras explains the trade-offs, and our guide to demi, full coverage and plunge bras compares coverage levels.

Sports Bras for a 38C
Match the support to the activity.

What size sports bra for a 38C? If the sports bra is sized by band and cup, buy your 38C. If it is sold in S to XL, a 38C is usually a large; check that the brand chart lists 38C under the size you choose, rather than picking by band alone. A sports bra that only fits your band will flatten and squash the cup.
Low impact activities such as walking and yoga suit a wireless compression bra. Medium and high impact activities such as running and aerobics need more control: look for encapsulation, where each breast sits in its own cup, an adjustable band with hooks, and wide, padded straps. At a 38C, encapsulation styles reduce movement better than compression alone. Our guide to sports bras explains impact levels and support types, and the sports bra collection covers every level.
Common 38C Fit Problems and How to Fix Them
Most problems point to the band or the cup.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Band rides up at the back | Band too loose | Tighter hook, then try 36D |
| Straps dig into shoulders | Band too loose, straps doing the work | Try 36D, then adjust straps |
| Band digs in or leaves deep marks | Band too tight | Looser hook, then try 40B |
| Cups spill at the top or sides | Cup too small | Try 38D |
| Cups gape or wrinkle | Cup too big, or wrong shape | Try 38B or a molded cup |
| Center gore lifts off the chest | Cup too small or wires too narrow | Try 38D or a wider-wire style |
| Wire pokes under the arm | Wires too wide or too tall | Try a balconette or a different brand |
Start with the band. At 38C, the most common problem by far is a band that is too loose. People often choose the larger band for comfort, then find that the straps dig in and the bra rides up. A 36D band feels firmer at first, but it carries the weight properly and usually ends up more comfortable by the end of the day.
Then look at the cup. If the band is right and the cups gape at the top, the issue may be shape rather than size: a plunge or a molded cup often fits shallow breasts better than a full coverage cup. Our guide to gaping bra cups covers each cause. If the cups dig in and create a double bust line, go up a cup to 38D.
Put the bra on, lean forward, and scoop each breast into its cup from the side. Then stand up. If the cup now overflows, you need a larger cup; if it still sits smoothly, the size is right.
Bralettes and Lingerie in 38C
Soft styles work at a C cup with the right construction.
A C cup on a 38 band is well within what many bralettes can support, as long as the bralette is built for it. Look for a wide elastic underband, lined or double-layered cups, adjustable straps and a hook-and-eye back. Bralettes sized by band and cup, such as 38C or 38C/D, fit far more reliably than those sold only in S to XL, because the band stays firm while the cup has room.
Unlined lace bralettes suit lounging, sleep and light layering under loose tops. For a full day under fitted clothes, most 38C wearers find a lightly lined wireless bra more comfortable, since it keeps a consistent shape and gives a little more lift. For lingerie sets, check that the bra in the set is offered in band and cup sizes; a set sold in letter sizes is fine for a bralette but will rarely give an underwire bra the right fit at 38C. Shop bralettes.
38C Bras by Situation
Different outfits call for different bras.
Most 38C wardrobes work well with four bras: two everyday bras in skin tone and black, a strapless or multiway bra, and a sports bra. Add a minimizer if you wear a lot of button-up shirts, or a plunge if you wear a lot of low necklines.
When Your 38C Size Changes
Bra size is not fixed for life.
Weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, hormonal contraception and exercise can all change your size. Often the band changes first: someone who loses weight may move from 38C to 36D, keeping the same cup volume on a smaller band, before the cup changes at all. Someone who gains weight may move to a 40B or a 38D.
Check your size every six to twelve months, and any time your bras start to feel different. Our guides to bra size after weight change and why your bra size keeps changing cover what to look for.
Making Your 38C Bras Last
A well-kept bra keeps its fit for longer.
Rotate between at least two or three everyday bras so the elastic in each band can recover between wears. Hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, or machine wash on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag with the hooks fastened. Air dry: the heat of a dryer breaks down elastic and can warp molded cups and underwires.
Store molded bras with the cups nested together rather than folded in half. Replace everyday bras roughly every six to twelve months, or when you are on the tightest hook and the band still rides up. A stretched band is the most common reason a bra that once fit well stops fitting.
What This Means for You
A 38C is a C cup on a 38-inch band: about a 38-inch underbust and a 41-inch bust. It holds the same cup volume as a 36D and a 40B, which makes those two sizes your first options when the band does not fit. In other countries it is a 38C in the UK, an 85C in Europe and a 100C in France.
Check the band first. If your 38C rides up at the back or the straps dig in, a 36D is often the better size. If the cups spill, move to a 38D; if they gape, try a different cup shape or a 38B. Then choose styles for the way you dress: a T-shirt or full coverage bra for everyday, a minimizer for shirts, a strapless for bare shoulders and an encapsulation sports bra for running.
